I got this from a seller in Germany. he isn't too sure of the content but he seems certain it is silver though. I found many other Pope John Paul II medals/coins searching online but none like this. the only thing that makes me inclined to doubt its material is the world 'italy' stamped on both sides.

Silver washed base metal. These are common medallions sold to tourists in Rome.

On Polish auction sites they go for 2-3 Euro.

Silver plated base metal seems right to me!
I have seen one or two examples of these in a $5 dealer's junk box in Sydney.
