Hey guys, I got this from the ANA Mini-Mint. This was likely made for a presentation, so I suspect the ANA staff made this error intentionally. It looks like an off-center token at first glance, but upon closer inspection, it looks like something else. The design itself isn't off center, but the design just disappears around the middle portion of the coin. The reverse is kind of warped and has a mirrored impression of the obverse (like a brockage maybe). Help would be appreciated, thanks!  Edited by ANAcoincollector

If it was intentionally done, then it can't be an error.
An error is generally caused by an unintentional
disfunction during the striking of the coin.

True! I may have worded it badly. I believe this is an educational piece simulating an error. I was wondering what type of error this token is simulating.

HondoB has it right. The upper die has the coins on it, the lower is the camel die. A piece was struck and stayed on the lower die. A second blank, your piece, was laid partially on the brockage maker (struck coin still on the lower die) and struck. One side looks like an off center strike, the other side is an off center brockage strike. This most likely was made during a demonstration or during the summer seminar when the odd strikes usually come out. Presentation strikes are in Brass and are struck by the die maker, who is me.

The reverse definitely looks like an off center brockage! However, I'm still confused about the obverse. My observation is that normally, the design is missing past the edge of the off center coin because there is no more planchet area to strike. This one, however, is missing the design on the inner area of the coin. Normally, shouldn't the design go through the red line, or am I missing something? I'm trying to mentally figure out the positioning of the coin between the dies, because the reverse is an off center brockage for sure, but the obverse doesn't seem align with the reverse. Not to mention, the design is cuts off all of a sudden inside the coin   |
