I just noticed this listing on GC; a 1970-S quarter overstruck on a 1898 gold half eagle! PCGS has graded it PF66, and bidding is already up to $22k. While a fascinating error, I can't imagine paying crazy money for one that was almost certainly intentionally made. I only say "almost" because I suppose there is some infinitesimally-small chance that a 72-year-old gold coin accidentally made it into a bin of quarter planchets... https://www.greatcollections.com/Co...CGS-Proof-66Edited by hokiefan_82

Since the different grading companies use various qualifiers for artificial/questionable toning or color, I don't see why there couldn't be some qualifier for errors that are most likely intentionally manufactured. The date is barely identifiable but they were able to it is seen I believe under that tail feathers on the reverse. I agree 100% intentional because there are odd proof "errors" from 1970 that exist, namely: 1970-S 25c over 1898 $5 1970-S 25c over Barber quarter1970-S 25c over 1941 Proof CAN 25c 1970-S 25c over Philippines 25 centavos 1970-S 25c over (1911-1936) George V CAN 25c |
