U.S. Mint Press Release
United States Mint Presents National 9/11 Memorial & Museum with 2,983 Special-Issue Coins Honoring Victims
WASHINGTON, August 21, 2026 — The United States Mint (Mint) today presented 2,983 special-issue Enduring Liberty Half Dollar coins with privy mark to the National 9/11 Memorial & Museum (Memorial) in honor of the victims of the September 11, 2001, and February 26, 1993, terrorist attacks. The privy mark includes the date "9-11-01" encircled by the phrase, "ALWAYS REMEMBER," a pledge to never forget the Americans whose tragedies and heroism marked September 11, 2001. The coins—struck at the Mint's West Point facility in upstate New York—were delivered to the Memorial in advance of next month's remembrance event, marking a quarter-century since the 9/11 attacks and coinciding with the Nation's 250th anniversary year.

"This coin is a tangible representation of the strength it took for our nation to look forward, both 250 years ago at its founding, but more poignantly 25 years ago, as the world was changed forever," said Mint Director Paul Hollis. "While we will never forget those fateful attacks, our nation continues to pass the torch of enlightenment to future generations in remembrance and in honor of the 2,983 victims."

The obverse design shows a close-up view of the Statue of Liberty, her steadfast gaze looking outward as if toward the future. The inscriptions are "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "IN GOD WE TRUST," and "1776 ~ 2026."

The reverse design features Liberty passing her torch, its flame trailing with the momentum of purpose, to a new generation. Inscriptions are "E PLURIBUS UNUM," "HALF DOLLAR," and "KNOWLEDGE IS THE ONLY GUARDIAN OF TRUE LIBERTY."

The standard issue (non-privy mark) Enduring Liberty Half Dollar entered circulation at the beginning of 2026 and is being manufactured for one year only at the Mint's Denver and Philadelphia facilities.

IMHO, they should be gifted to the families of each of the "2,983 victims".

I think that is a brilliant idea.

Absolutely agree igwt79, for the families who lost loved ones in New York, Pennsylvania and at the Pentagon.
Among those who died were those aboard the airplanes and those incredibly brave "first responders" who risked their lives to save others. Although the vast majority of those who died were from the United States, 74 countries lost citizens that day as well.

May we always remember

I agree they should be given to the families, but maybe more should be made for the ones who survived the attacks as well.
