Has anyone else tried out the new "live" auctions on ebay? A couple of well known dealers have run auctions using this new format. I tried participating in them but found it incredibly frustrating and even impossible to even place a bid on the last auction! For such a well established platform as ebay and for such high profile dealers as the ones involved, I would have expected a more professional product. I think the last attempt was extraordinarily amateurish. Just wondering if anyone else here tried participating in any of those "live" auctions and if you did, were you able to place a bid? I might try one more auction and hope the teething problems have been ironed out. Sounds like a great concept but so far it seems to be a monumental flop. Sad really. Anyone have any luck yet? |

Interesting. This is a new format to me. Maybe I should start reading the emails I get from ebay.  Sounds like this new option has been rushed.  |

Yes, I get notifications on my phone almost every day, which I hate, and I can't find a way to unsubscribe from them!

I was getting them on my phone. Accidentally clicked on one and it seemed to be a bad way to impulse buy problem coins. Quote:

I removed all the saved sellers I had from my Ike project. That cut down the notifications a lot. I now only have it set to email, no app notifications. I only have the three saved seller that I bought older coins from, they might have my "last three" show up. |

I've found that a lot of people tend to bid very high on there, often not on items worth the bid, I occasionally hop on just to watch in awe. The amount of pure gambling on "packs" is astonishing... "1/10 packs have gold" etc. I'd be interested to know if anyone had received something interesting/worthwhile from a "losing" pack. The few times I've jumped in on silver world coins I've also had issues with the bids not taking, or coming in much more delayed than a standard auction would be. Never won one, sometimes bids never took  Not a fan so far! Edited by MintedNotPrinted

Its 99% junk from what I've seen - selling at stupid prices.
I cant see a catalogue of upcoming lots.
So no static images that can be studied prior to the auction.
I suspect shill bidding also.
The only useful info is that the participating sellers are to be avoided !

I watched another auction today (it will be my last on that platform). It's surprising that it was so unprofessional given the experience of both the seller and ebay. The sellers that I watched, and have bought from before, have held online auctions that were user-friendly and usually represented good value for money. This "live" format on ebay doesn't seem to benefit buyers or the seller. I really don't think some of the prices paid were good value and some others were ridiculously cheap. The cheap prices might be more of a case that bidders couldn't place bids because of the user-unfriendly platform? Or maybe they were 'throw aways' to get people sucked in? I'm wondering why experienced and trusted sellers would bother with this "live" format? The usual online auctions they have held seem to work fine and are very much more user-friendly than the "live" format, so why bother? With all the experience that ebay has, why would they bother with this new format and why has it been so difficult to get it right? Maybe I am just getting cynical in my old age but there does seem to be more and more dodgy practices going on in an effort to bleed money from collectors. I not sure that some of the prices being paid (and certainly asked for by some dealers) are a true indication of the real value of the coins on offer. I guess that is a sign of the times Happy (and careful) hunting. |

This takes us back to what echidna said, the ones who persist are sellers to avoid. |
