1805 4 Berries Draped Bust Dime (You Vs PCGS)

Looks amazing.

I'll throw out a grade and guess AU.

this is pretty impressive for an early dime.
I'm going to go with AU55 or MS62. I'm leaning toward the MS side

interesting history on the early dimes

In the early 19th century, U.S. Mint operations were still developing, and striking pressure was adjusted manually. Test strikes were sometimes made at reduced pressure to find the correct setting. If the pressure was too low, the dies would leave parallel lines on the coin. This was common on early silver coins, including half dollars and dimes, before standardized press calibration became routine. I'm pretty certain this is what we see on the obv across the lower hair.

Also the 1796-1807 Draped Bust dimes were minted in the Mint's formative years, and many examples show mint-caused adjustment marks. I'm thinking this what occurred on the rev rim from K3-K6

here is my 4 berry not quite the grade of this one

We had two grades come in the AU range--and one strattling AU/MS. My least favorite thing about this coin is the weakness in the strike on the reverse--we definitely lose out on some cool feather detail. My favorite aspects are the originality, the color, the sharpness of the eagle's face and the clouds, and smoothness of the surfaces for the grade.

Fun bit of heritage: this coin is actually the Zack, Scuderi, and Sherrill 1805 JR-2 plate coin seen in the Bust Dime Variety Identification Guide on page 35. I like strong strikes, but I also like really nice coins that are a pleasure to look at. This is so far the highest grade of the 6 Draped Bust dimes I've collected so far. Maybe I will specifically focus on getting a stronger strike when I go for the 1798 and the 1807 issues, as I am still missing them.
