Sorry I don't know the proper subforum for this question wrt buying Commemoratives on ebay.

California doesn't collect tax on gold coins $2K and up (if I understand correctly). But ebay charges tax anyways. But supposedly ebay can refund if contacted. But it doesn't seem possible to reach a human at ebay. Does anyone know anything about this scenario?

Don't know the CA sales tax laws but ebay has problems quite often with properly collecting sales tax.

I haven't tried to contact ebay by phone in a while but the person you get makes a huge difference in getting the sales tax refunded. Most times you get someone that hasn't got a clue but after trying several times you may finally get someone that can get you a refund.

Refuse to go ahead with the purchase if the checkout screen shows an erroneous tax inclusion.
If the coin you are purchasing is a gold bullion coin, see if you can find a similar example elsewhere.

There is a thread on the forum regarding ebay tax issues.
Yes you can get a tax refund if the purchase should not be taxed, HOWEVER be prepared to call numerous times and wait for months. I am currently waiting on a refund after two representatives and in Month two.
