Found this while sorting pennies today. It's all PMD but I was wondering if anyone recognizes the stippling around the Queen's bust or the type of stamping of the obverse and reverse?

Looks like someone found dad's punch set in the garage and tried them out on that penny.

Quote: someone found dad's punch @nfine given the random placement of letters and numbers you're probably not far off. I wasn't sure if the back-back C might have some significance but that's just my mind working overtime. The stippling looks like it might be some type of corrosion about to bust through but the coin otherwise looks to be in decent shape from that standpoint. Thanks for looking!

That stippling is probably from the 3 being punched on the reverse. If you look at the right hand leaf, you can see something similar from the 1 being punched on the obverse. That compressed copper has to go somewhere.

Quote: stippling is probably from the 3 Great observation @JimmyD I totally missed that and I remember that the 3 was very deeply punched into the reverse - even more than the others. As I think someone on here said "I'll keep it with my odds and sods".

Does it mean anything? Well, it's entirely possible that it did have some kind of meaning to whoever it was that did the stamping. But since they're not around any more to ask, we'll now never know. Functionally, the result is no different from the alternative answer, "no, it was always completely meaningless, just random punches randomly stamped onto a random piece of metal that just happens to be a 1 cent piece".

with nfine. When I was at school we had a metalwork room with punches that could be used to stamp our initials on the things we were working on. I am sure quite a few pupils tried them out on coins just for a bit of fun!
