I have been trying to identify 1939 Jefferson nickels for reverse of 1938 or reverse of 1940. I was having trouble determining which was which. I was trying to determine which by the lines in Monticello's steps. I couldn't definitely tell for sure. I started looking around and ran across this: "on the obverse of the '40 reverse coin the S for "In God We Trust" has a serif top and bottom. !938 obverse does not. Anybody else heard of this? Any truth to this?

To me, this is the easiest way to differentiate the two reverses. The difference in '38 and '40 font is fairly apparent.

You can also go by the S in PLURIBUS.
No serif on top, 1938.
Serif on top , 1940.

I appreciate the replies. My 1939 P,D, and S all have serifs on the s in trust on the obverse, leading me to believe rev.40 The '39 P and D have a serif on the s in pluribus on the reverse. Still rev. 40. However, the 39 S does not have a serif on the S in pluribus. Something seems to be amiss. What's up.
I have also studied quite a few examples of PCGS graded1939 nickels on ebay. I found a few coins that do not conform to the serif diagnostic, i.e.1939 rev of 40 with no serifs I am interested in buying the 3 1939 nickels to complete the varieties, but don't want to buy anything until I have positively identified what I have
