Might anyone be able to give a recommendation for a good scale or pocket scale (if there is such a thing). Something that could be used to weigh out bullion or...I suppose any coin. All recommendations are much appreciated. Thanks!

Ahh...SIGH. After looking and not finding anything I posted this thread...and then JUST saw a thread for digital scale reviews. My apologies. Any recommendations on a pocket scale maybe? OK...I am off to the other thread to see what I can learn, thanks.

For a pocket scale spend no more than $20. I've purchased mine at a Harbor Freight Tools for under $15 and is just as good as a $100 small/pocket scale.

If you are going to weigh Silver you should have a "Troy Weight Scale" and not a regular avoirdupois scale. Troy weight per ounce is heavier at 31.10 grams per ounce as against our regular (avoirdupois) at 28.65 grams (I may be a little off on that figure, but 28 part is right). "But" there are only 12 Troy ounces in a pound as against our 16 Oz's. So, while a Troy ounce is heavier, a Troy pound is lighter. "Got all that". Someone on the Forum gave me a very good URL for this stuff and I lost it. If your scale is used mainly for Silver or precious metals get a "Troy Scale".

The scale that I have been using from Harbor Freight (HF) is model Cen-Tech #393543. This scale offers unit siplay of either grams, oz, dwt, and Troy oz.
It has a capacity of 500g and retails for about $15. It's pocket sized too and I've not had a problem except running out of battery power at the wrong moments.

fcrazo, thanks for that information. Harbor Freight is my favorite place to shop. Thats a good bargain for a scale that does avoirdupois and Troy. Hope my HF has one in stock. With a 20% off coupon they just mailed me the price gets even better.

Agreed. Your digi-scale needs at least 2 digits after zero for accuracy, must weigh grams, dwt, oz, ozt. They're cheap, not over $30 for the some of the high capacity ones. But for coins, a smaller scale of finer calibre is preferred.
If you're old-school get a triple-beam, although they will run you a lot more money usually. And they're not as portable as digital scales.
If you're worried about the power running out on you, don't. Use good alkaline batteries. Not recharageable (nickel-cadmium). Get a backup scale for extra accuracy.

Wontoo, Lee Valley is a great place for tools. But the last time I checked, they only had one digital scale and it only went to 1/10th gram. I would have the same concern about a scale from Harbor Freight. I have a digiweigh DW-100AS; got it on ebay for about $24 shipped. Happy with it so far. |
