I guess I shouldn't necessarily use the term "hosed". I mean, given the picture that was posted I definitely got what was posted. It's a '48D Franklin supposedly in "AU - NM" condition.

After studying the photos I figured it was AU. The problem was that the lighting was such that it appeared to have some luster in the fields. After getting the coin in hand I think that "luster" was actually the flash bulb hitting the friggin' whiz marks all over the coin! At least that's what it looks like to me. I have not had a chance to examine it too closely.

Anyway, just wanted to vent a little. I'm sure there are plenty of people out there that have far worse stories than this one!

Sorry hear that! I've bought a few whizzed or otherwise cleaned coins by accident too. One of the reasons I've pretty much given up on ebay.

Sometimes it's a real gamble buying coins on ebay. You are definitely not alone. I've been burned a few times myself.

Yea, I try to only buy knowingly lower grade coins, or lots for a crapshoot and melt / cheap. I promised my self there are other good ways to get the coins I need.

I Found that this site so far has quenched a large need for ebay. with much better satisfaction!

I only buy coins from individuals who sell only coins with a return policy on ebay. I am trying to ween? Myself off ebay. I'm getting sick of their fees and policies.

I don't sell on ebay any more since their commissions have gotten so outrageous. The only coins I buy are spot-priced silver and inexpensive slabbed dollars in the MS-61 to -63 range.

Can the people on this thread inform me of the characteristics of a "whizzed coin". I have never seen one, or maybe I have one and don't know it.Thanks.

I think the question is - did you pay an AU price or did you overpay? I buy coins on ebay sometimes hoping for a bargain. Sometimes I get one, other times not, but I rarely pay more than the coin is worth. In other words, for the coins that don't pan out, I end up getting a coin worth what I paid for it. If in doubt, bid conservatively or for the worst case scenario.

I also always buy from sellers with a return policy. If something is really not satisfactory, I send it back.

I've only had to send a few coins back and have hit a few home runs on coins that turned out nicer than expected. Net result is positive overall.

Best regards,
Ken

Rastatodd,
Usually silver coins that have been whizzed have a lackluster, very white appearance. I don't have one. Maybe someone here does.

Sorry to hear about your misfortune but it's a common occurrence these days.

There is an excellent article in this month's (June 2010) edition of Coinage Magazine called, "Internet Auctions: The Pros and Cons". It should be required reading for anyone buying coins online.

I'd link the entire article but it's long and I don't want to get into trouble with Coinage so I'll link just the cover photo. Spend a couple bucks on this issue. It is worth it.

Same here, I usually don't buy too much on E-Bay, just sell, but I've also gotten stung with an over priced mis-represented coin etc , however, I've also made out real good on a few other coins that I've purchased on E-Bay well under valued, so it's all part of the game.

Just like everything else, ebay can be a real mine field,I have found several good sellers that I use exclusively or at least almost exclusively I'm not opposed to impulse buying if I see something.

our own forum Mom sells and is a top shelf seller, detailed descriptions ,accurate grading and superior service are Her hallmark.

I (feel I) got hosed on ebay, too....well; I hosed myself selling these two coins at these prices

It works both ways.

1859 BB Five (5) Francs (Napoleon III) - Gold - MS -- $48
1907 S US Phillippines One Peso (Silver) - VG/F -- $5.50

j_h_s_, I must have been asleep that week, sorry. This 2 heller was whizzed in the '70's, the coin's composition and more than a decade left on top of a shed is just bringing it around. The 20 centavo, whizzed at least 30 years ago, seems a lost cause. Wing feathers obliterated and probably erased what was left of the stars.
