Inquiry - Accepistis Gratis And Habenti Dabitur No Habenti

jdambrosio New Member United States 8 Posts	Posted 03/27/2011 11:32 am Greetings All. I am wondering if someone might know more details about a particular coin in my collection. I wrote to the Fitzwilliam Museum and they dated it to between the second half o the 16th century and late 17th century originating from the Spanish / Austrian Netherlands. However, besides that it defied precise identificaiton. There are two inscriptions including "ACCEPISTIS GRATIS" and "HABENTI DABITUR NO HABENTI". And I have attached a picture as well. (No date or value)In googling those phrases a lot of biblical references came up, and one of the crowns on the lion side seems to be a bishops miter. Maybe if you could make out the rest of the inscription on the "accepistis gratis" side you might be able to narrow it down more. Another thing, that style of lion is very often on Netherlands coins. The total phrase on the front side is "GRATIS ACCEPISTIS GRATIS DATE" which I believe translated means You have taken freely; give freely". This shows up in a lati proverb from Polydorus.
