I have only been collecting for a short while, and buying off ebay for about a month. but already I have seen a few dodgy offers.
One was a 1971 2p coin listed as rare, and the first of its kind. Well, the last bit is true... Somebody bid 55p for it + postage of about a pound or so! I also saw an alleged dateless 20p for sale, only showing the reverse. This was highly suspicious as the date appears on the obverse for all 20p coins showing the new shield minted from 2008.
I have found some absolute bargains though.
Something else which I have found useful.. Local banks often receive old banknotes from customers for exchange. My local bank keeps them in a drawer by the counter and sends them off every couple of weeks or so. They are only too happy to let me see what they have got and exchange them at face value. I got a reasonable Kentfield £20 note (1991-1998)showing Elgar on the back for just its face value. On the web you would easily pay double or more.
