This design was intended to replace the older "Sawhorse" $1 US Notes, which had been around with different seals since the 1870s, but for some reason it was never produced in massive quantities like it's blue-seal Silver Certificate cousin. Enough were printed, though, that it is readily available in any grade, albeit at prices reflecting it's status as a "single issue type note" - i.e., with just one series year and one signature combination. There's a bar in Kalamazoo that has an old railroad sign or something like that with Erie and Kalamazoo mentioned. I thought it would be cool to own them. This Upham woodcut counterfeit has plate letter J, printed signatures, and serial number 8644. The Upham marginalia has been trimmed away.
