Purchased this over the weekend for my type set. Edwin Stanton, eccentric looking for sure, was Secretary of War under Lincoln during the Civil War and generally regarded as a logistical wizard - an unheralded champion of the Union's victory. The short-lived 1890 Series of Treasury notes was only in production for a short time before the switch from this so-called "Ornate Back" to a much simpler version in 1891. These 1890 examples are much scarcer than their 1891 counterparts. Condition here - two incomplete horizontal partial folds (no creasing), no vertical folds, and overall general evidence of light handling and perhaps counting. I would grade it conservatively at EF-45 with fully original paper.

Thanks, guys. Somewhere I have the 1891 version, with the same signature combination as I recall - I'll find it and put the reverses up for comparison.

Impressive addition Mr.Frog....your note would have fit nicely into a number of recent threads.

Stanton won't win any beauty contests, but Lincoln depended on him as much as he did any of his generals.
