1863 and 1865 Farthings - both are in the Lustre levels, 1865 is virtually UNC I am sticking by an aEF/EF grade for 1863.





1864 a decent high Fine and a good EF 1866 coin

Took a month on a 48 hour tracked delivery but it arrived eventually.

Love the originality on that proof, and I was a bit surprised by the price on those albums until I remembered it was in NZD, and now I think it's a really GOOD deal!

Here's yet another contemporary counterfeit halfpenny for today. Just came in and got a soak in the blue ribbon and now it looks quite presentable, it was almost unidentifiable in the seller's photos so I got it for a song.

It's struck off-center on a slightly elongated planchet (26.5 x 27.1mm) with a slight clip @ K3 not really visible in the photos, and the dies were misaligned on both sides. Heavy triangular dentils, fat date, very linear Britannia with squared-off shield. On the obverse, George is merrily whistling away, probably a quite unhappy tune given the way things were looking for him in 1775. When you see the George with the pouty/whistling lips it's quite amusing and you can't "unsee" it ever again.

Very lightweight at 92 gns (5.9 grams) and thin.

The sheer number of die varieties, types, and subtypes of these imitation issues makes even US Large Cents look positively tame by comparison when it comes to die studies. I've seen estimates ranging from 300 as high as 600+ different known varieties for just the GII and GIII halfpennies and evasive issues, and even that might be low.

I generally have these criteria that define what I collect: It should be French and it should be beautiful or special - but I do on occasion disregard the first criterion. A Gothic florin in good condition I have been on the outlook for for some time, and I am very happy to have acquired this one. I consider this coin to be among the top five most beautiful coins, all categories. (And no, my other British coin does not qualify to be on that list .)

That Gothic Florin is a heck of a place to start a British coin collection. Consider me officially envious!

The Halfcrown finally arrived after 2½ weeks (Our mail service here is very bad like Zimbabwe)






It is entirely legit!

Has the silver ring, feels silvery and not magnetic - just very worn and some cracking on Reverse. I would say as a Provincial piece, just not that well minted!

Even better is the coin is a scarce variety - the regnal year is NONO (9) meaning its 1697 not 1696 and with the small shield must be worth more than the $78 I paid for it.

That 1844 Halfcrown, the Gothic Florin and the gorgeous Double Florin just made me drool
