My first really nice florin today.

This 1929 only cost me $10, that is just a dollar more than the worn Fine one I already had and just 30% higher than melt.
Really nice indeed!

I finally got the key Halfcrown to my series.

Someone warned about quality - but there is no choice here in New Zealand, this incredibly worn example is the only 1905 Half crown I have seen for sale here in years. I passed on it in May, but it came back on the market and snapped it up this week.

It's Good at best and possibly aGood (A bit too nice for lowball) but if it were any more worn, you would not make out the clear number 5 on it.

It was pretty cheap (Well under £100) and will do until I get an UNC one

Thanks the postal service has got better as the lockdown has eased to "Level 2.5 restrictions" so named as the government allowed Level 2 in Auckland (Most things open but social distanced) but with meeting limits of 10 and mandatorio mask wearing in most places.

These florins arrived today, a day later - 3 coins in Fine or better condition and they have dates

They are Edwards with dates!

These are 1908, 1909 and 1910 and I have ordered a very nice 1907 which is coming soon!

UPDATE: A group of Jubilee Head and Old Head Victoria Florins I have just won (At least 3 and possibly as many of 7, as 3 of the auctions have closed, but 4 to run).

I will show these coins when I get them, I don't have any as I just have the Eddies onwards, a worn Godless Florin and 2 dateless Gothic Florins - so improvements all around.

These Florins are coming together quicker than the Halfcrowns. I have about 50 Florins now, a month ago I had 6 silver ones.

I have always loved the Edwardian florin without any heraldic crests or shields, but with a standing Britannia, stridently impressive I think, compared to the rather tired and mundane seated versions of Britannia we are used-to on copper and bronze. I clearly remember in the nineteen-fifties when these (and even occasional Victorian silver coins) were quite commonplace in change.

Indeed, as a schoolboy in the Cotswolds I had a paper-round delivering an evening paper - the 'Gloucestershire Echo' at 3d a copy, so the weekly (6 days) bill was 1s/6d i.e. 18d (18 old pennies). Friday evening was collect-the-money day and out of around sixty customers, the total takings amounted to around £4-£5 (sometimes more with tips). Out of that pile of coins (usually few notes) there would, without-doubt have been a couple of 'Vicky' silver and Edwardian coins and a bit more pre-1920 George V silver. In addition in the bronze, several bun-pennies and later. It was at this time that I started collecting H and KN pennies that were also pretty easy to find. Those were the days! Frank

Great story

Oh I wish I had been around then, I would have spent more time going through the coins than delivering. Did you ask your boss, "Can I choose the coins for my pay".

I won all 7 of the Florins as well, so they will be here soon. They are all Victorian which is more cream on the cake.

Lucky, I wish I was not born in 1976 and in New Zealand, to be about 80 in the UK. I ironically I have a good friend there who is nearly 83 and he is the one sending me all the Alphabet 10ps and Paddington bears and he is full of great stories about finding 150 year old coins in his change until 1971, when he told me it got really boring.

Although one point you may be wrong on is the Imperialism is still dropping all over that coin, the symbolism of proud Britannia, the prow of the ship (Britannia rules the waves - get the hint Kaiser Bill) and her shield screams Union Jack, its the Bronze coins on speed. I know my coins are a bit worn to show all that, but nice ones its as clear as day.

I agree about shields and heraldry, these were traditional half crown devices and when the Florins first came out, they used them as the original goal was to get rid of the Halfcrown (The fact gothic florins were slightly larger than later florins), but then in 1874 back it came and both coins had to coexist. They seemed to have had a rethink about shields in 1911 and finally in 1937, the shields disappeared for the floral symbols of the UK, and the Halfcrowns kept the heraldry up to the end.

I really can't wait for these Florins to arrive as I will have some of every era, and the person selling to me says he has more.

Very nice, Princetane! Congratulations on the Edward VII silver! I think you did well on the 1905 halfcrown - mine isn't that much better than yours (though it has a fuller, clearer date) but I paid £150 for it back in 1981 - I'd just started my first job and had a bit of cash on me! Mind you, the dealer threw in quite a few other coins as well including several pre-1947 silvers...

hibernianscribe - it must have been amazing looking through change in those days. I started collecting as a kid a few years before decimalization and by that time pre-1920 silver had virtually disappeared, though bun pennies still turned up and it was fun looking for the Hs & KNs!

Nice early sovereign

As promised my family of Victorian Florins

The 3 Jubilee coins. The 1888 is a very nice piece between high Fine and close to VF , the 1891 a scarce date is about Fine to Fine . The 1889 is an authentic Jubilee florin

1888 - a sweet coin, much better than my halfcrown that year. It cost $25 or about £12.50. Although I suspect both were cleaned historically - coin cleaning is unavoidable in NZ sadly.

Not bad, cost a bit more - $36, £18.35

The Old Heads are less spectacular, but fill a big gap in my collection at this stage.

Like Edwardian Halfcrowns, these designs are overdone and have a low rim resulting in letter wear. The 1893 is so worn that the dealer thought it was 1897. The 1898 and 1899 are VG and the 1901 is heading near Fine. The good thing about these four is all but the 1901 cost $15 each, which is basically silver value plus GST and the slightly better 1901 cost me $22.

In all I feel I have done well, from 7 silver florins a month ago to 62 florins in total now (44 silver) it is what I call a massive expansion.

Now I turn away from quantity towards quality

Finally wouldn't you all agree that Victoria has a very sour look on her face, especially with those Jubilees, I know she would look silly grinning like Jacinda Ardern, but come on - she screams Ms Grumpy there.

To be fair she hated that design herself and tried to have it abandoned before issue. She was in time to get it stopped from the bronze coinage, but too late for the silver. It was only used for a few years and then replaced with the old head design.

On the other hand, the engraver was probably creating a true representation of the miserable old bag she had become. She had been in mourning since the death of Albert, wearing black for the rest of her reign. I doubt she cracked a smile in public in 40 years!
