Very nice. :) I've seen so many 12's that are trashed, so seeing a really good one is refreshing.
Nothing exciting today so far and only got some reasonable George VI florins for well under scrap prices.

When I was a penniless student I once went to a Coin Fair in Lens in Northern France. I was amazed at the number of high grade early George V British silver coins I saw. I imagine they were brought over by soldiers during WW1, spent in France (possibly with ladies of ill repute!) and hoarded as silver bullion by the recipients, eventually passing down to a younger generation who traded them in at their LCS.

All I could afford was this 1914 florin. It looks nicer in hand than in this picture:

Model coins are something I'd never really looked at but it's a deep rabbit hole..

Been having a little clearout of my garage.. And found this tube I had for collecting pennies for the slider machines prevalent in the 80s..


So, if I follow standard practice I should put it on ebay as "RARE unchecked unresearched coin hoard - unknown dates!!"?

(I'm kidding obviously but I've not found anything that interesting so far)

I rescued this 1936 florin from my local coin dealer's melt bin. I thought it was much too good to go to melt! Under natural light there are traces of lustre on the reverse and around the obverse lettering:

However the main purpose of my visit was to get some gold coins that he was selling for a little over melt. This is a British type coin but minted in Australia - a 1914P (Perth) sovereign:

A 1917C (Calcutta Mint) sovereign, a very scarce date (mintage 58,845) although sadly it's got the red staining sometimes seen on 22-carat gold coins alloyed with copper:

Finally, a 1918-I sovereign, minted in Bombay. The only year that Bombay struck British sovereigns:

The dealer threw in a Diversity 50p free of charge!

i heard that the gold coin red stains, is cause by silver or iron depending on the coins. Really it's just the impurities reacting with air due to the alloying. Impressive lot of coins Rob. :D wish I money gold ones to.

The 1918 I had was good but it always looked a bit out of place.
So thought it was time for a better one.
