Dear Elbesaar,

You mean you actually had communication with "Uncle Dave?" I am envious.
I have a story that I have wanted to share for a long time. I was not sure. But here goes.
Last May at the New Hampshire Coin Expo I had the chance to chat with Mr. Miller of Miller's Mint. He was a personal friend of David. The stories he told me!

Evidently there was a falling out among the members of the family - estrangement. David's son was about to be married. David had just been diagnosed with Lou Gehrig disease.
There was reconciliation at the wedding as the entire family attended. A happy ending.

During Dave's last weeks, Mr. Miller and he had long, philosophical conversations. Mr. Miller, a Catholic and Mr. Feigenbaum, a non-practicing New York Jew. No doubt a spirited debate.
But one thing David admitted: his illness had, in a strange way, reunited the family.

I could scarcely hold back the tears: my hero was mortal after all.

The closest that I have gotten to DLRC was a request that I sent to Eileen, the editor of the Barber Journal, to obtain permission to use a photo. Son John Feigenbaum said, "Sure, why not?"

David had documented a particular die variety and I had photographic proof. An 1896-s dime. To make things even sweeter, I had BOUGHT the dime from DLRC!

So, in a very small way, I carry on David's work.

Do you have any stories to share?

Rest in Peace

Matthew,

I have heard stories myself and as far as I am concerned, they are just that: Stories.

The few conversations I had with Dave were when I started collecting Barber dimes in 1994 - 1996. He and I spoke a few times before I had heard that he was ill. I was working on a Dansco Album. I picked up a few coins from him from time to time and when he was converting to just slabbed coins, he called me and offered me his entire inventory [ of the dates I needed that is ] and to pay what I could - when I could.

I of course heard the same rumors you must have regarding why he went into Slabbed coins and out of the raw business but he and I never discussed those rumors. He and I had candid conversations and as he was the Barber Guru of the day, I had a lot of questions for him. His sage word of advice [ and I have heard this before in other collectible markets ] "Buy The Best You Can Afford !! "

Over the years, I have done a substantial amout of business with DLRC and since I completed my sets in AU 58+ / MS 66 - I have not bought too much as of late. My newest venture of a MS Date Dime Set and an XF/AU Complete set of Dimes has caused me to buy something from them two weeks ago.

Rest in Peace

Looks like we are in the final stretch - still need to post a few more coins - and I am sorry for taking over this thread -
but I hadn't been on this web site very often - and hated to see the Thread closed without showing my coins.
I have appreciated the comments asking for me to continue posting my images.

If anyone has thought of going to the ANA Summer Seminars in Colorado Springs - I hope you consider taking my course in The Coinage of Charles Barber - my co-instructor is Glenn Holsonbake of Pony Express Coins - Holsonbake Numismatics - from Folsom, CA. This year's schedule is Week One - June 22 through June 27.

Will post additional images later this weekend before the Super Bowl.

Thanks,
Mike Hayes / Elbesaar
