Yup
I cant stand the whole mint to demand thing personally. Its a catch 22, if you limit it to 100k everyone wants it and people complain but if you do the mint to demand people stay away and probably at least half the sets are bought for resale. Even if you capped them at like 200k they would get more interest, the to demand thing just takes away the specialness of it especially when you do it every year.
I tend to agree I dont see the raw sets for these doing anything anytime soon. Maybe in a few years, maybe.

Yea I dunno, I missed the first silver eagle set they did for the 25th anniversary, I bought it on ebay so I like the idea of minting to demand but it does seem like its getting long in the tooth now. They should probably experiment with mintage numbers.

I wouldnt be happy if I missed out on one, but something being hard to acquire is part of the fun when you do get it. The harder it is to get the more valuable it seems which turns around into being a self fulfilling prophecy a lot of the time on the market.

Yea thats true.
From a purely speculative viewpoint, I think one has to really flip these coins as there is rotation and changes in interest and very few coins from this modern period hold their value.
Nevertheless, I do think if you just even socked away a few gold american proofs of silver and gold every year over say a 10 -20 time period you would be golden (no pun intended).

gold and silver flat today, no surprise. Market is waiting on FOMC minutes before anything else happens, and that is going to be tomorrow, so again, watch the REACTION to what is said rather than what is said.
GLD- lower high, lower low today. Still below the most recent gap.
SLV- lower high, higher low. Still above the 6/20 gap.
Its possible that we do get some sort of reaction that moves this in either direction so stay tuned. Considering how volatile things been lately, I expect some sort of fireworks tomorrow, if not I would be really surprised.

just a quick night time update- I find it interesting that in front of the FOMC minutes being released tomorrow, gold is getting knocked down. I would have thought gold would be flat into tomorrow. Does that mean that perhaps someone has already gotten a hint of what happens tomorrow? Or are these just late night whip saws in a sleepy sessoon?
I dont know but I find it interesting that gold would be down in front of the FOMC.... should be an interesting market tomorrow! I expect some volatile wild swings. Buckle up!

I think Yup called it right on those, simply a watered down market.....
Crank out too many sets ever year in huge production numbers and folks loose interest esp if they LOOSE the most key quality....
"Those special silver bullion coins are nice, but IMO they aren't worth the premium you pay. I won't pay $70-$80 for a one ounce silver coin just because of the design or finish it has. Just a few bucks over spot I am willing to pay."
Could not agree more, even those most I have bought sold for more then what I had in it which makes the above a moot point, but as seen with this west point 2013 sets not always the case....
Hard to say what will win in long run....
I think the Maple leaf privy mark TITANIC silver rounds esp around the 2012 dates will always increase in time for so called higher premium bullion pieces....
Why, cause the Titanic's story is larger then life, the most famous sinking ever in all of mankind's known history....
Rich or poor Death showed no bi-est that night if you were not lucky enough to be on one of the life rafts, and that has much to do with it, band playing til the end a mini society all going down together....

I know of a set which sold at 125 and the buyer felt bad and offered to accept cancellation as they knew it sold for under mint price, way cool of them.... Tough ethics call there.... I look at it like this a running auction is a gamble. If you are willing to start low and use NO reserve you gotta take it on chin and just sell, unless the buyer is cool and opts out as above example... I use BUY IT NOWS instant pay required now to eliminate the red tape time wasting bs.... I crank my prices high, then run 15 to 20% off sells which then offers what looks like great deal and often is but still with my 30% atleast profit figured in after shipping and ebay and pay-pal, the PRICE I wanted to price at too begin with. And keep in mind I sell mostly collectible toys which has a much larger VALUE GREY AREA (one may think its worth 150 and others 300 for example) verses cut and dry pm pricing via spot and premiums we all know and understand.... Like Yup says price is king and it is.... Old saying you only gonna get paid what somebody is willing to pay.... True, but if you wait long enough most often someone will pay what you want if its rare enough and they want it bad enough....

The market is expecting a 10 to 15 billion dollar taper tomorrow. The fed will only taper between 0-10 and gold will likely rally on the fed minutes is my call. Any tapering will be accompanied by dovish rhetoric.

On ebay between $60-70 and this web merchant; http://silvergoldbull.com/silver-co...-silver-coinEdit; Highest for Canadians coins that is.

The way I view Fed day is like this: a big event full of NOTHING. Its really noise. No one really knows much and for the most part, the entire market carries on and does what it wants to.
What I do on a day like today is
1- see what sets up, triggers with confirmation
2- manage risk, IE following stops and trailing stops
3- wait, watch, do nothing if theres nothing to do
The real money is just letting things play out, not trying to even waste time on thinking what the Fed wants to do. I don't care what they want to do, I just care that whatever sets up, sets up.
For me, I am looking for an opening to sell short gold and silver again, at the yearly lows.

My uneducated guess is that there will be NO Fed tapering and that's why paper gold was brought down because it might start to go up again after today's announcement. ...but don't bet the house on that... lol

Hawk, I have to agree on ebay. My sales for September were the worst since I began selling. Ninety percent of what I sell are coins; however I do sell other things from time to time. I have a nice supply of Pontiac Car parts and I put some up this month at low retail, and didn't even get one watcher. I checked completed listings and my prices were below most of what had sold in the last three months. Same with coins and bills. I pulled one listing because I hadn't got one view and was starting off well below face value. lol, I'm not going to sell a $5 bill for 99 cents! On the whole mint to order thing. I think I agree and disagree. I agree that right now it is being oversold because of the resellers buying large inventories; and driving the mintage up. I disagree because I suspect that one of these times the resellers will be tired of buying large lots of merchandise that they just sit on, and eventually sell for cost. At that point I think we will see a true rarity slip by. I for one did not buy from the mint this time. I purchased my set online for a bit below the mint price; when the free shipping was calculated in with it. As for today, Heck I don't know. The have been foreshadowing tapering for months now. Which should mean it is going to happen. But everytime I am sure about what the fed is going to do, they do the opposite. I notice the talking heads ( not the cool band!) are saying that tapering means a rally on Gold. Really do these people even live in the same Universe as the rest of us? I guess if one were going with the path of least resistance, we would say that they would announce some tapering, with a statement saying they could back off of tapering and go back to full QE.."If the economic variables demand it". Price wise? Hey, lets all remember that these guesses are for fun, and nothing else. That this is all hot air simply for the amusement of our little group. Oh, and so Miggs can say "I told you so" When I'm wrong.... . Without further ado....I see prices bouncing around $1250 for Gold and $19 for silver. I'm going to stick with that even though my gut is screaming $17 for silver! Have a Happy Fed day!

Well, thus far this AM, a lower high and lower low for GLD, a small gap down.
There are several views and scenarios tossed out here, none of which I personally subscribe to and I really dont care but I want to share them with you so you can get a better picture of what traders are thinking of the action right now-
A- this is nothing but a trap for traders who are trying to front run the FOMC meeting and minutes and those who continue to sell short. when the Fed minutes come out, they will get crushed because gold and silver go higher.
B- others are of the school of thought that someone already has gotten a whiff of what will be said and therefore that is the reason gold and silver are down ahead of the meeting.
C- Simply put, this meeting is another non-event, no one knows what will happen and its wait and see along with a nice big serving of volatility that will make things choppy for a bit, therefore this segment of traders carry on and wait for set ups that confirm and ignore everything else.
Thats pretty much it. I know I am in the C camp. I'll manage risk, look for set ups and as far as gold and silver I am waiting further confirmation before getting involved.

Quote: so Miggs can say "I told you so" When I'm wrong.... Ha Ha. I would be tempted but I won't. I wouldn't want to get piled on here. I stopped buying gold a while back. So I will always want to see it go up.. That's why I portray the optimist instead of the realist. The fact of the matter is, if gold goes up, likely the economy is going to heck in a hand basket And that's not good
