Well, I got a phone call yesterday from one of my pick up banks, and they wanted to let me know there was 2 boxes of pennies for me, so after work I high tailed it over there. I picked up some quarters and dimes to round out the hunting session. well I was pleasantly surprised when this little gem slide out of one of the rolls. Shinning like the northern star on a clear night   Not only is it a rare year (no Circulation quarters in 1997) but its also Sterling Silver... Score and Score. Someone had to crack open a mint set to remove this, and then roll it up to get 25 cents. it pretty nuts to think about. I also got a 64 dime in awesome condition as well. |

Good finds, ace! I think one of the greatest mysteries of coin roll hunting is why people would break unopened sets to deposit coins that have a face value of much less than their numismatic value. Not only was that not issued for circulation, but it's silver as well!

Sometimes they are lost or worse stolen and then spent at face value. Then rescued by CRHs. I once found a 1989 proof penny in a bank roll. Though a little scratched it is my first and only proof find roll hunting.

I actually found a 1997 silver dime a few weeks ago, I wonder if it came from the same set as this quarter?

Denny, I find tons of cents like this clash, are they worth keeping? I thought they needed to be more substantial to warrant a premium?

I'm not really sure about a premium, I just had not seen to many 1957 clashes, more in the 60s. I also kinda keep everything.

I didn't go through all the pages of this thread. Forgive me if this has been asked. If I was just looking for silver would I have a better chance spending $500 on a box of quarters or getting 2 boxes of dimes and double the coin to look through?

By personal experience, I have had better luck with dimes in circulation. I have worked a job involving cash transactions for the past 2.5 years and found 11 silver dimes and 2 silver quarters in cash registers. I think people generally don't pay as much attention to dimes because their dates are smaller and they are worth less than quarters. I have not coin roll searched enough to determine which is better roll hunting. Maybe Wolfman could get you come dimes  . 3 different portraits, all silver - great score from 1 box! |
