Thank you so so much everyone who helped me set this up. For anyone looking to get the best photos of their coins, definitely go to page 1 and buy this set up.

So, the last part came this morning and I've been playing around for hours on end. The liveview and zoomliveview is absolutely essential for focussing with the heliod.

Here is my set up: (ignore the phsteven dog background on the laptop)

I'm absolutely ecstatic with this camera set up. I have a lot to learn now with regards to sharpening, contrast, etc, and a lot of fun to have from now on!

EDIT: Another photo

Thank you very much. I'm really pleased, all it takes is a lot of trial and error and patience. The lighting is actually quite hard to get right, and I have to change it according to what coin I am taking. I'll be sure to post more photos of my coins!

This is a great setup. I thought about buying USB camera from Amazon, but I already have EOS camera/lens & a tripod. I just need to get some lighting equipment. Will consider this. thanks!

Hi Coconutjoe,
After using the setup for a few months, I'm getting a lot better and really enjoying it. I can't imagine a USB camera ever getting as good results as this, but I know some people are fond of them! If you already have the camera, lens and tripod then definitely stick with it. Lighting is cheap, I picked up mine from a local auction. I know people use the Ikea lights mostly, not sure how expensive they are.

Do you have the focussing helicoid, and extensions for getting the coins to fill the viewing screen?

Hey everyone, I am jumping into this, but I'd appreciate some help verifying that I'm purchasing the correct items.

The next thing I need to get is the M42 focusing helicoid 17-31mm. While searching on ebay I've noticed some listings which say M42 to M42, while others say M52 to M42. Can anyone point me to the right one? Thanks in advance. This thread is amazing, and I look forward to eventually adding more proof once I'm taking pictures!

Thank you! As far as the extension sets, I'm hoping to avoid buying something that ships from China simply because I'd love to get started on this sooner than later. The only sets I saw listed for 7/14/28mms ship from there, though. What's the story on other lengths of extenders? I saw a set of four that are 5/10/15/20mm. I'll definitely wait for the shipment from China if that's what it takes, but just trying to see what my options are.

The granularity is what's important. With 7/14/28, and a 17-31 Helicoid, you can get 17-31 with helicoid, 31-45 with helicoid + 14, 45-59 with heliocid + 28, 59-73 with helicoid + 14 + 28. I'd highly recommend buying two sets of extensions, so that you can go beyond 1:1 magnification with a 75mm lens.

Sorry, still a bit confused. So if I'm following you, you're saying stick to the two sets of 7/14/28s? I've going through a billion listings on ebay. So many extension tubes, and lots of them don't even list the lengths.

Edit: are these appropriate? https://www.keh.com/shop/canon-eos-...-682445.html

I'd stick with the M42 tubes. Will save wear and tear on the camera mount. Two sets of 7/14/28 will give you all the flexibility you need.

Here are a couple options:

Andy, are you sure your extensions are 9/16/30? I think you may be including the length of the threads. Yours look like the standard 7/14/28.

Hey Ray et al...sorry for the confusion on that extender setup...they are 7/14/28...my measurements were the overall length of each piece to include the threads. I updated it.
