4 banks today yielded only a single, common, circulated Ike. It's back to normal for me :)

I don't understand how, but I picked up $140 in large dollars from a bank tonight and found another silver Ike...I'm shocked, but obviously very pleased!

As you can see, the silver is a '71S

This is the first time EVER I obtained Ikes in wrappers, which is noteworthy.

I got my first Ike ever from a bank yesterday, a 77D. Nothing really special about the coin, other than the fact I actually got an Ike from a bank! I was at the bank asking the teller for halves, and the assistant manager (who heard me) was walking behind the tellers and he said "Does anybody have any funny money?" He reached over to the other teller's station and pulled the Ike and said "We don't have any halves, but we have this. Would you like it?" When I said yes, the other teller gave me the evil eye. Maybe she was planning on taking it when her day was done. I felt a little guilty, but not for too long.

Berto- impressive couple of weeks for you! How many banks are you checking daily to get the volume you've been finding? I prob went a solid year of at least 2 bank visits a week and totaled 2 Ikes during that time. That was at least 2-3 years ago.. might need to start checking again with seeing your posts as motivation... I still kick myself about my newbie mistake when I first starting collecting by hunting for halves.. my first ever silver find was 10 90% from teller tray on what might have been my first time even asking.... the teller next to her said "we have dollar coins to, do you want them?".... I said no and walked out.. I kick myself thinking there could have been silver or at least some nice Ikes there that I didn't know about.. went back next day after I told my friend and he told me to go back and they were gone... oh well... I got the halves and still have them 5 years later

CLS12, I make rounds to 24 different banks/branches and visit each one about every two weeks. I choose a different route home from work to do so. As a result, I am burning only a bit more gasoline than I would on my normal daily commute. On the days I make stops this adds about 30 minutes to my commute. Many folks don't realize if a teller is not working the day they stop by and ask for halves/dollar coins, then they miss-out on what the teller may have had in their drawer. I try to visit the banks/branches on my list at least every 2 weeks to ensure I minimize "missing out".

I have only one teller that holds coins aside for me...Wish I had about 30 more such tellers :) I hear from the one teller about once every 2 months, and then I swing by and pickup the coins they have found and pay them a few times face...I'm not certain how long it will take for this teller to learn these silver coins are more valuable than what I am paying her, but she is happy for now and I will enjoy it while it lasts.

Of course, I also pickup an awful lot of dumped halves on my rounds. I simply accumulate them in $1K increments and deposit them at my dump bank. This occurs about every 2 weeks. The tellers I buy the halves from are relieved to see me, which is good. My dump bank hasn't flinched yet, which is also good.

The Ikes that are common and circulated go into a bag. After I accumulate several hundred Ikes in the bag, I advertise them locally for sale at $1.10 each for a minimum of 100. I use the 10% profit to purchase silver halves. The Ikes I want to keep are MS-quality and fill a hole in my Dansco. The batch of 140 Ikes I just picked up not only had the 71S silver business strike, but also an entire roll of 20 MS-quality bicentennials...I must keep such beautiful coins!

I've yet to find a silver big dollar coin! Congrats on the Peace dollar!!

What does everyone do with the "normal" Ikes you get? There is a antique store where I live that buys them for $1.25 each. I know that's not much of a profit but it beats just keeping $1 coins just laying around if their is nothing special to them!

They are all special. Every. Single. One.

But honestly, I understand not sitting on them if they do not interest you and getting $1.25 each seems more than fair.

I have a couple rolls in my sock drawer to use as tooth fairy money when my kids get a little older.

That is a good idea! You never know if the bug will bite. The Ike dollars from my dad are what got me started.

I picked up 25 Ikes from a bank yesterday. They had a few more but I was short on cash. They also had halves, perhaps another CRHers dump because it was several hundred dollars worth, so maybe it would be worth driving back across town with more cash today...of course it's worth it because one never knows what may be hiding in the mix!

Oh, there were 4 BU Ikes in the 25 I picked up so I'm happy.
