Here's a $5 silver collector coin release from the Royal Canadian Mint released in 2005. It marks the centennial of Alberta joining the Canadian Confederation on September 1, 1905; Alberta joined the same day as Saskatchewan.

The coin's commemorative design was created by Michelle Grant who's design - "Big Sky Country" - received the most votes in an open contest sponsored by the Mint. The design depicts a wild rose (Alberta's provincial flower) flanked by wheat spikes, an oil derrick with cattle grazing on an open plain and, finally, a mountain range with a setting sun.

Here's a $5 silver collector coin release from the Royal Canadian Mint released in 2005. It marks the centennial of Saskatchewan joining the Canadian Confederation on September 1, 1905; Saskatchewan joined the same day as Alberta; each traces its roots to districts within the former North-West Territories. (See previous "Commemoratives" thread post: 2005 Alberta Centennial.)

The coin's contest-winning, commemorative reverse design is the creation of wildlife artist Paulett Sapergia; the design is named "Western Meadowlark." It depicts a singing Western Meadowlark, perched on a fence post with barbed wire, as its primary foreground design element; the bird is flanked by shafts of wheat. To the left of the bird is seen a railroad track that leads to a large grain elevator in the background. To the right of the Meadowlark is depicted the sun setting over the open prairie. The coin's obverse presents a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II.

Back in 2007, Canada was one of the nations that participated in the International Polar Year scientific research/expedition project - the 125th anniversary of the first such project - and was also one of the countries to produce a commemorative coin for the event.

In Canada's case, it was a sterling silver $20 coin. I think the coin has a sharp design. It features multiple polar-related design elements, but doesn't come across as "too busy" to my eyes - I think the elements blend well.

In 1983, the Royal Canadian Mint (R C M) issued a commemorative silver dollar (SD) to help celebrate Edmonton, Alberta serving as host to the Universiade (a word made by combining "University" and "Olympiad").

The Universiade (University Games) is a large, multi-national, multi-sport athletic competition for college/university students. It is coordinated and staged by the International University Sports Federation (FISU), which is based in Lausanne, Switzerland (2011-present); at the time of the 1983 Edmonton University Games, the Federation had its offices in Brussels, Belgium (1949-2011).

The commemorative reverse of the silver dollar "features a track and field athlete behind the Universiade logo: a twist of the victory ribbon which forms the letter 'U' for university and the lower-case "e" for Edmonton, into which are sunk the dove of peace and the maple leaf, emblem of the host country."
