In 1828 Sir Edward Thomason produced a "Series of Scientific & Philosophical Medals." Each of the 16 medals is 73mm in white metal. Notable was medal #12, Phrenology.  Some of the medals were images with text and some were just text. The size of the text was so small that a magnifying glass accompanied the original sets. 1. Mechanics. 2. Optics. 3. Electricity/Galvanism. 4. Hydrostation/hydraulics & Pneumatics. 5. Metallurgy/Specific Gravities. 6. Chemistry. 7. Astronomy. 8. Mineralogy. 9. Geology. 10. Chrystallography. 11. Mountains/Classification of Minerals. 12. Phrenology. 13. Marquis of Worcester & Captain Savory on the steam engine/Trevithick on the high pressure. 14. Newcomen & Beighton on ditto/Perkins on the high pressure. 15. Watt single for raising water. 16. Watt double for driving machinery/with every improvement |

Here is a challenge coin that I recently picked up from Pecos National Historical Park in New Mexico. As you can see, it commemorates the Battle of Glorieta Pass from the Civil War.   "If you climb a good tree, you get a push."

here are a few tokens (called rekenpenning or jeton in Belgium) from Brussels in the 1680-ies what connects them is the detailed ornamented coat-of-arms of the higher city official (treasurer, director of the channel Brussels/Scheldt) I can't resist collecting these little gems, they tell their stories of the history of those years 1680 Jean Heymans, first treasurer of the city  1683, Willem van Elshout  1685 Jan Heymans again  1686 Willem van Hamme  1686 Jacques Madoets  edit: images uploaded Edited by 1c5d7n5m

two more examples from the 1650-1670 period: 1653 'capture of Duinkerken' - coat of arms of the Van der Haege family  but the best example is this one: 1667 on the reverse the amazing coat of arms of Petrus Justus van Armstorff on the obverse Archangel Michael, patronsaint of the city of Brussels defeats the devil; the legend DIVVs MIChaeL.patronVS contains the anagram for 1667 MDCLVVVII  |

@1c5, it seems that at least a couple of those tokens seem to show a dragon hauling away a paschal lamb. Any idea of the story behind this imagery?

Any idea of the story behind this imagery? good question, thanks for asking the imagery of these tokens is often striking or strange, which makes them interesting Dugniolle (the reference work most often used) does not explain the images; but often Gerard van Loon or Gerrit van Orden do According to van Orden Handleiding voor verzamelaars van Nederlandsche historiepenningen, Leiden 1825, Volume 1 who describes the jeton under #1381, the image shows a dragon holding (protecting) the jewel of the golden fleece, which is one of the main ornaments of the Habsburg rulers. I believe that the image applies to the war between Spain (Charles II) and France (Louis XIV) for dominion over the Spanish Netherlands. |

here's a jeton a bit earlier, showing the jewel of the golden fleece in full size; the title of this piece is "capture of Thionville" a Spanish victory in the endles Spanish/French hostilities  and below the very complex coat-of-arms of Philippe IV, king of Spain on the reverse, one can spot the jewel of the golden fleece again |

Great new posts Spence and 1c5d7n5m I upgraded my example of the rarer 1916 Panama California Exposition San Diego So-called Dollar1915 dated ones are significantly more readily available. The upgrade one is closer in appearance and grade to my 1915 version. A previous post on these medals with more info here ~ http://goccf.com/t/301479&whichpage=92#2871853PREVIOUS 1916 with stripes worn off Uncle Sam and ship's hull quite worn. ( I still know it's a great medal despite the wear ) NEW 1916 ( This image will update when I get a chance ) NICE 1915 I have here  Edited by TNG

Lovely jetons and San Diego 1916 medal. Thanks for posting and describing. My contribution holds none of the charm of these last two, for an event called WORLDWIDE BLACK EXPO 73 held in DC at the RFK Stadium. I looked for online information to no success except that numerous cities held such an event.  |
