Quote: I wasn't sure of the origin of this symbol It could certainly be an Iron Cross but looking at the 1968 date the counterstamp may have been intended as a Surfer's Cross. Based on the Iron Cross design it was worn on a chain or thin leather strap as a necklace. It was quite the fad back then for surfers. (And teens in general.) Some had a small figure of a surfer in the center but many did not.

chafemasterj: Nice collection... What's the earliest LWC that you have counterstamped...and do you have a 1943 steel cent counterstamped? Regards, KK

Thanks KK. Nope. I don't have a 1943 steel LWC counterstamp. As far as the oldest, I think it's 1919 but I'll need to look. It has the common square and compass counterstamp used by the Masons. I do have one IHC counterstamp. (A photo of which I cannot put my finger on at the moment.)

The best "Smoking Abe" I've found to date. There are several different stamps that I've run across. This is the first with the cool detail in the smoke...
