Quote: We have to find where the coin is from before narrowing down dates and denominatiosn (not directed toward the game master) Is this a new thing? Is there a reason why we can't work on multiple criteria simultaneously?

One can reasonably argue that place comes before denomination, but there is no reason we can't simultaneously be working on date, composition, whether the legends are in Engish, Arabic or Swahili, and so on.

I did not say it as a rule. However, it is normal to first find date. we can work on many things at once, but I think that finding the origin is smart. We can work on them all at the same time, but it is smarter not to.

Some of us old guys like to multi-task, and can even guess country, date and chew gum at the same time ! Logic dictates a few small restrictions, like: - not guessing denomination before we know country and era - not guessing composition before we know region and era ... - not guessing about U.S. mints before we have narrowed denomination and date range ... But this early in a round, I see no problem working on location and date simultaneously ... (that means we are guessing in space-time!) So, does this coin bear a date before the year in which the Treaty of Versailles was signed?

Does the coin bear a date from before the Aquarian Exposition: 3 Days of Peace & Music held in Bethel NY?

An aside: I grew up a mere 30 miles from where this famous Exposition was held. To locals, this was the summer of weird-looking clueless kids driving through ... who'd have known? And ... yes, that cuts the date range in half (nice job @spence). Hard to believe that Woodstock was half-way between the end of WWI and the present.

Quote: a) who said I am a youngster This is called the "Ladder of Inference." Somewhere in this thread you mentioned classes, or school, or studying. So the normal inference is that students are young. But I have a young man in the chemistry course I am currently teaching who is at least 50. Beware the ladder of inference.

You are a teacher... Wow. You know that some people go back to college in their 50s to get another degree.
