Recap: it's a US coin, minted in San Fran or Denver and it's not silver which narrows it down to...large cents, Indian head, flying eagle, Two Cent, Half Cent, Three Cent, buffalos, V nicks, shield nicks, colonial is out because that's east of mississippi...mmmhm...

I'm holding off on questions for just a moment...till we get closer.

Sounds like you might have a gold coin minted in San Francisco. Is the denomination less than $2.51?

Note: Unless I'm mistaken, a yes answer would exclude $3 and $20 and narrow the options for $5 and $10.
