Quote: My theme for today is decimal currency. excellent theme erafjel ! and WOW splendid copper coins the 5 decimes from 1794 (again a design from Dupre) is fantastic ! here are two decimes; one from Paris (A an 5) and one from Lille (W an 7); one cannot be surprised that the design is from the engraver Dupre Obverse: Marianne with phrygian cap; below Dupre Legend: REPUBLIQUE FRANCAISE Reverse: Un decime; An ... and mintmarks surrounded by wreath of oak leaves be it Liberte Assise on the 2 sol monnerons, Marianne on the decime, or the Statue of Liberty on a New York island, all seem much related to the ideal of freedom and equal rights nice website for the history of Marianne https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marianneto end this post, specially for our US friends who seem to be either on vacation these days or sleeping too much the American dime (an abbreviation of decime) was introduced in the US monetary system in the same period, which is quite amazing, or perhaps not, given the fact that Lafayette and Jefferson were very good friends and in contact all the time. Many books and articles were written about connections, similarities and differences between the American Revolution and the French Revolution; it would draw us too far from the coins but appearance of the dime/decime in the same decade should not escape the attention of CCF

I am a bit surprised there are not more contributions in this thread. I am sure there are more than two collectors of French revolution coins in this community...

Below is a 2 sols from the Monneron Brothers produced in Birmingham in July 1792 of interest because the term FRENCH REVOLUTION was actually mentioned on the coin(or should we say MEDAL OF CONFIDENCE) the obverse is similar to the ones posted before (except l'an IV) the reverse is different: MEDAILLE QUI SE VEND DEUX SOLS A PARIS CHEZ MONNERON PATENTE' legend: REVOLUTION FRANCAISE

thanks erafjel ! it is more difficult to find high quality pieces of this type than of the 1791 type a second piece I can show has even more wear & tear than the first (one can almost sense the hardship of the owners of this coin during the reign of terror) but REVOLUTION FRANçAISE is quite clear

Lovely coins, 1c5d7n5m! The last coin from me (now having depleted my French revolution collection) is like the one you started with, but a different mint. 2 sols an 2/1793, à la table de loi/à la balance, Rouen (B)

Quote: The last coin from me (now having depleted my French revolution collection) what could stop you to expand your impressive collection? The period of the French Revolution between mid 1793 and mid 1794 is called the reign of terror - a terrible year indeed, full of violence, mass executions. Terror was deliberately introduced into daily life in order to advance the ideals of the revolution. See speech of Robespierre in this link https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reign_of_Terror

Quote: what could stop you to expand your impressive collection? Well, it is still growing, slowly... So many other beautiful French coins from other periods that need attention (and money) too. But that revolutionary 2 sols just made it to the top of my wish list for revolution coins

Quote: that revolutionary 2 sols just made it to the top of my wish list for revolution coins excellent idea erafjel however, when it comes to Monnerons featuring REVOLUTION FRANCAISE, one could consider this piece of 5 sols, minted in Birmingham later in 1792; it is my favorite coin of the French Revolution, symbolizing a number of interesting ideas a Monneron 5 sols type Hercule The design of the reverse is similar to the 2 sols Liberte Assise 1792: MEDAILLE QUI SE VEND CINQ-SOLS A PARIS CHEZ MONNERON PATENTE' legend: REVOLUTION FRANCAISE 1792 It is the obverse which is amazing: The superhero Hercules (who will appear regularly on later French coins) sitting on his attributes, trying in vain to accomplish another "work": breaking a bundle of wooden sticks, as we have seen before a symbol of the Revolution. Hercules cannot break the bundle however, as the "united sticks" are to strong. the legend explains the idea further: LES FRANCAIS UNIS SONT INVINCIBLES Magnificent idea that is true for any movement or group. This idea can also be interpreted in the context of political events: counter-revolutionary initiatives that were gathering momentum, both inside France and via a series of international coalitions against France.

That 5 sols piece has a place on my wish list as well. In the meantime, let me show the 5 francs piece with Hercules again. I feel for poor Hercules, all the hard work with that bundle of sticks in vain! Unbreakable it was. But, it certainly looked good when he flexed all those muscles and it did impress the spectators. So now he hangs with the girls of the revolution. He looks pretty happy, after all...
