Here's one of my favorite "Horse" coins - the "Little Horse" Peso of Mexico, better known as the Caballito Peso. The example in my collection is from the first year of issue, 1910. It's included in this "Hands" thread to highlight the important symbols being held by Lady Liberty in each of her hands.

The Peso was originally planned as a commemorative coin to mark the 100th anniversary of Father Hidalgo's speech in the small town of Dolores, Mexico that served as a catalyst for Mexico's revolt against Spain - the "Cry of Delores" leading to Mexico's War for Independence. Interestingly, the coin was initially considered as a 50 Centavos piece, but ultimately wound up as a One Peso. The coin/design was struck from 1910 through 1914.

The reverse of the coin is where its true beauty resides. It depicts a young girl - representative of Lady Liberty - riding a a horse without a saddle or bridle; she is shown sitting aside the horse (vs. astride). In Liberty's upraised left hand is a flaming torch (symbolic of enlightenment and hope), in her right hand is an oak branch (symbolic of strength). In the background is seen a rising sun with emanating rays. Taken as a whole, the design represents the spreading of the spirit of independence among the people of Mexico.

The design presents a clear sense of motion in the direction of the viewer's left, as the flame from the torch and Liberty's gown both blow behind her to the viewer's right.

The coin features the recessed edge inscription: "INDEPENDENCIA-Y-LIBERTAD." In English, "INDEPENDENCE AND FREEDOM."

The design was the work of Charles Pillet of France.

The obverse features an updated version of the Mexican Coat of Arms.
