I previously posted about the stars on the obverse of the 1925 Stone Mountain Memorial half dollar (see link below). This time out, I'm discussing the stars found on the coin's reverse.

The stars on the Stone Mountain half dollar's reverse are arranged somewhat randomly vs. in an obvious pattern or stylized constellation. Though often difficult to see on more weakly-struck coins, there are a total of 35 stars included. Gutzon Borglum, the coin's designer. included 36 stars on at least one of his early models for the reverse, but it appears one was lost by the time the design was finalized.

Do the 35 stars represent anything meaningful? Was the loss of one star out of so many important? Well, on the early plaster model, the 36 stars represented the number of states in the Union at the time of the Civil War's end (if you incorrectly assume the immediate and automatic re-admission of all 11 Confederate states that seceded - the re-admission process was actually not completed until mid-1870). So, the reverse's stars were supposed to have a symbolic meaning, they were meant to represent the Union as a whole vs. splintered and serve as a positive counterpart to the 13 stars on the coin's obverse which are symbolic of the Confederate States (including Kentucky and Missouri) that seceded from the Union. In my eyes, the intended meaning and symbolism remains even if its execution is off by a bit!
