How Far Back Can We Go? Sixth Edition! Ended At 1380 Waiting On 1379

Welcome to 1931 - a severe year as well for the Depression.
The 3rd of February saw New Zealand's worst ever earthquake at Napier in which 256 people died and it flattened the city of Napier. the Christchurch earthquake of Feb 22 2011 was almost as bad.





1931 GB Halfcrown - condition Extremely Fine or almost so, with 11 million coins minted that year, 31's are easier to get than 32's with just 4 million.

This coin may have been cleaned by an earlier owner but looks great to me. Tomorrow my 1930 coin will be more worn as its a scarce year.

As NumisRob said, average condition of this era is Fine, but I would quantify further and say Very Good to Fine. Before 1926 I see coins in conditions as low as fair becoming more common.

So bizarre to see the number of coins posted collapse after the blowouts of 1936, 37 and even 35.

Here is something different, a worn nickel 5 Frank, 1 Belga coin of Belgium





In contrast to the beautiful 20 Silver Franc coins shown yesterday, this is base metal, but quite large. Belgian coins of this era were issued in French and Flemish, here is a Flemish language coin.

In the 1800s the French language held sway and not until about 1905 did Flemish language get an equal footing. For those who don't know, the Flemish language is essentially a dialect of Dutch, and is spoken in the northern half of Belgium.

I know, I have like a 1927 Halfpenny and its practically in aGood condition! It is like these coins took a battering
Yet for some reason I see 1926 onwards coins are at least VG+ or better with the higher rims and the ghosting is gone unlike the 1925 and back coins. Heck even some of my 1950s halfpennies are barely fine!

I will try and post a few more pennies and halfpence for the sparse years.

How do you feel about farthings, I have a lot and they generally are Fine at least from 1901 onwards, You will see a VF+ 1927 and EF 1928 coming up and several VF 1910s and even 1800s dates.

With pennies, you can get at least Fine from 1927 onwards and 1936s are usually at least VF - yet my pre 1920 coins are VG in most cases, my 1917 is aGood and yet my 1914 is gFine (I may show that one).

Even though I love spending heaps on Halfcrowns - I love a colelction of bronze too because Pennies are such real coins to me - everyone had them.

The 31 and 32 Halfcrowns were surprisingly cheap - $20 and $25 (£9.50 - £12). AU up is when they get real pricey!
