1928 is my biggest year since 1934 First off - Ireland got their first coins issued in 1928   The set of 8 coins was based on a Sterling system, but with Irish language names and being worth slightly less than a British pound sterling. A pound was a punt made up of 20 scilling and they were made up of 12 pingin.Coins issued included Feorling (Farthing), Leat pingin (Half penny), Pingin (Penny) Leat reul (3d), Reul (6d), Scilling (1/-), Floirin (2/- Florin) and Leat Coroin (Half Crown). Reul is Irish for a sixpence and Leat means half. Before 1922 Ireland used British coins, although occasional pennies and fractions were issued between the 1200s and 1823 along with bank tokens in the 1810s. On Independence the Irish still used British coins and these ones came out in 1928. Designed by BRITISH artist Percy metcalfe, all showing animals. And minted at The Royal Mint in London, UK. The Shilling to Halfcrown were .750 silver until 1944 (More than UK coinage), but 3d and 6d cupronickel with bronze for the 3 pingin and fractional coins. Above is a 1928 Floirin in EF condition with some toning - a pretty piece. Edited by Princetane

Here is a near VF Half penny and a barely Fine penny Saorstat Eireann = Irish Free State   Designs on the coins¼d - Starling (Reused on Decimal 50p) ½d - Pig with piglets 1d - Hen with chicks 3d - Rabbit or Hare 6d - Dog (Irish wolfhound) 1/- - Cattle (Reused on Decimal 5p) 2/- - Salmon (Reused on Decimal 10p) 2/6 - Horse (Used on Decimal 20p) The Irish Harp design has survived right through to modern Irish Euro coins. Now we have had this Irish coin lesson, we say good bye to any coins from Ireland until we get to early 19th century copper pence and halfpennies! Edited by Princetane

A few British coins - Penny, threepence and sixpence:    1928 was the first year that all Kruger-Gray's new reverse designs were used on silver coins for circulation. It was also the year the small head was introduced on the penny and halfpenny to counteract the problem of 'ghosting'. Edited by NumisRob

And a very worn Halfcrown for good measure!   Unlike my others - this is very typical of coins plucked from circulation - it would grade gVG to about Fine. You will see some worse halfcrowns, but also some much nicer ones coming up. The issue for 1928 was high at 17 million coins - but this one cost me under melt value. NumisRob is right about these new designs, although some proof and trial versions came out in 1927. Some of the coins replaced designs from the 18th century! The crowned 3d was based on a design from 1770 or so. However in its present state the crown was modified for each reign. Tomorrow you will see some coins with designs from 1911 and even 1902 in the case of the Halfcrown. Edited by Princetane
