1926 UK Halfcrown - Type 2   The less common earlier variety. The portrait is surrounded by 188 beads, the modified effigy is not as deep and has 145 beads. This coin is near VF but sadly a cleaned example. Warning, my 1925 and 1924 Halfcrowns are pretty nasty looking! |

Great to see all these beautiful gold coins coming now. The pre crash 20s was the last great period of gold coins jangling in people's (some) pockets! On the other hand, me the more modest income coin collector goes to the other end of the coin metal scale!   A 1926 UK penny - this was the first penny issued since 1922 and was similar to the 1911 - 1922 style with the early effigy and higher face of Britannia, prone to ghosting and wear ( 1927 saw the higher rim bronze coins and smaller effigy). There is a 1926 Modified effigy coin, but this is incredibly rare (1 in 40 coins so about 110k minted!) This is a relatively decent example (High Fines approaching VF) and the date had a fairly low mintage of 4 million coins (Compared to 30 - 150 million at this time for most years). More 1926 UK coins   The shilling shows you how worn coins from this era can get. Back in the early 40s they were worn down to VG in some cases, 15 - 20 years earlier we are getting coins in aGood. This poor shilling probably circulated through to the 1970s at least. The design of the lion rampart on the crown dates from 1902 for the Shilling, but was only rolled out onto Sixpences in 1911. They replaced a crown design with the value in words that dated back at least to 1831! |

1926 UK Modified Effigy Penny:  1926 UK Modified Effigy Shilling:  Princetane - I remember getting coins like your 1926 shilling in change as a kid. They circulated freely until the 'silver rush' of the mid-1970s. An easy way to identify the Modified Effigy is to look at the designer's initials 'BM' - they are smaller and further over to the right on the Modified Effigy coins - and more likely to wear off altogether!
