Pepactonius - you must have the nicest and shiniest coin collection I have ever seen. It is really great to look at the quality and variety of your pieces. It must have taken a very long time and a lot of money to accumulate such a nice collection!  Dorado, Muddler, Paralyse - you guys have the hot stuff too - nearly every coin except mine shown is drool worthy  Everyone else don't get me wrong, I love seeing all your stuff too. Keep it coming.  I do all this sentimentality as my collection and contributions will thin out majorly from this point on. 1916 was my last big year and things are reasonable back to about 1895, but then it may some days you will see nothing out of me. I have maybe 30 coins from 1800 - 1890 and just 7 from 1700 to 1800 and only 4 in the 1600s, then nothing, unless I buy an Elizabethan sixpence or two in the next year. Let me start the year of Gallipoli on a high note   My 1915 Half crown is at least gVF and heading towards EF - it is my finest at this era and nothing will get out of the high fines going backwards except my 1893. 1915 was another huge year for Half crown minting with some 29 million coins minted. That is 28 times more than 1913!

I also have 2 very nice Russian coins dated 1915   A 10 (Grivnik) Kopeks and 20 Kopeks of Russia. These coins were half silver and judging by their lightness probably half tin or aluminium too. The 5/10/15/20 like this were of this metal and the Polipoltnik (25kopeks), Poltina (50 Kopeks) and Rouble were the fine silver. The 5 Kopeks was also issued as a huge copper coin. Russian coins fascinate me and these ones are pretty nice - the 10 Kopeks is gVF - EF and the 20 Kopeks is AU/UNC - just stunning you can see detail on the tiny crowns being held by the eagles and on all the tiny shields! Both coins have the mintmarks BC which are actually minters marks! BC stands for Viktor Smirnov (In Cyrillic B is V and S is C). I wonder if Viktor brewed vodka in his spare time  Edited by Princetane

Have to agree, a lot of 1920s silver is G - VG usual and then 1910s is mostly F - VF standard. I was amazed at how cheap my gVF Halfcrowns of 1915/16/19 cost ($25 - $30 each) compared to the same for early 1930s ones. Yet even a common Edward is $35+ for a near Fine one and the only Victoria's I can buy around the $30 mark are G - VG. Last 1915 coin - a stained farthing in decent condition.   I tried to take the photos on different surfaces to get better results - did not work. This is thhe last bad photo for a while. I shot all my early 1910s today and the photos came up really sharp. |

Better images of the Russian 10 and 20 Kopecks.   20 Kopecks - look at that detail   10 Kopecks. All of these Half silver coins and the 6 copper ones (5, 3, 2, 1, ½, ¼ Kopecks) had the eagle motif on them and the design had barely changed since 1861! Only the 25 Kopecks up to the Gold and Platinum had an image of the Tsar on the coin! |

I've always liked the Russian Empire eagle on these coins, especially if the coins are high grade.
