One of my better coins and favourites.  An 1897 South African Republic Halfcrown (Boer coinage) These are beautiful coins issued between 1892 - 1897 (1898 as well for the penny). The Boers used sterling coinage, but that was as far as it went, the coins had values in numbers rather than words and were struck in Berlin (1892 only) and Pretoria, not London. France 1897, 50 centimes. This is the first French "art nouveau coin", and the first in the famous "La Semeuse" ("The Soweress") series, which - with a break 1921-59 - ran with the same design until 2001. 1897 saw only the 50 c coin, 1 and 2 francs followed in 1898.  |

Nice selection guys. NumisRob glad you could provide Half crowns for the years - I had one, but it had Paul Kruger (Public enemy number one in the Empire 1899 - 1901!) instead of Victoria. My 1897 is very sparse, but 1896 promises to be much better. My only other 1897 pieces are medals This is a gorgeous white metal medal which celebrates the 60th Anniversary of Queen Victoria's reign, her Diamond Jubilee An event so special, that moving images were caught of the parade through London on June 22nd 1897, with Victoria in a Landau and even smiling!   It's only white metal, but in GEM Uncirculated with an official box from 1897. Unbelievably it came a in a collection I got cheap and guessed it cost around $3. Hope you guys like it - its one of the main pieces of my Victoria collection. |

Another medal I have is a New Zealand one struck in Sterling silver and about the size of a Halfpenny   It shows Her Majesty being informed she was now queen in 1837 and a modern image of her on the back, it was meant to be worn as a bracelet. A special medal which was minted in New Zealand privately by a Wellington businessman (Name escapes me, but he was Jewish). Also this medal, which was a commonly sold one in the UK   It features images of Her Majesty by William Wyon on the Obverse and the current "Old Head" on the Reverse by Thomas Boehm. It is inscribed in Latin, how she is Empress and sixty years of work well done. The medal was made in 5 types (!!). Most were white metal, then small (27mm) and large (45mm) silver and also small and large gold (Very scarce). This one is a small silver variety. Edited by Princetane
