Here is another Halfcrown - Now it is worn and that is because 1961 was a scarce year - in fact the scarcest of the series with just 80,000 coins issued.





This one is gVF (EF/XF to you Americans and beautiful kind people who grade with their hearts) and was only used for a few years. 1961 was the first issue of Florins and Halfcrowns since 1953 and there was only limited numbers issued through to 1965 for Halfcrowns as the government was intent on phasing them out first.

Apart from 1963 Florin numbers were quite high most years.

A gorgeous 1961 South African 50 cent coin. The first year of its rand currency and Republican state.

The size, shape and silver content (50%) is entirely borrowed from the old Silver crown (5/-).

Except 5s is now 50c and the Queen has given way to Jan van Riebeck the founding father of the Cape Colony.

When we get to 1955, I will show you the crown design it replaced.
