1935 is a great year as well. First of all - New Zealand, this year had the super rare Waitangi crown and fairly rare 3d. I have neither sorry.   This is a 1935 Florin in VF condition - quite scarce as only 750k were minted and most are in Average Circulated. This contrasts to the 2 - 3 million each of 1933/34 but much more than the 150k of 1936. The Waitangi Crown was a one off showing a Waitangi scene of a Maori Chief and Governor Hobson shaking hands. Just 1128 were minted, 468 Proof and 660 standard. The 364 Proofs were sold in sets and the others also added to an "Uncirculated set" The coins cost 7/6 each (50% more over Face) and sold very poorly in the Depression - hence the scarcity. A Waitangi crown in any condition is $6k or more. I will probably never have one. Of course numerous fakes abound and Chinese lead and manganese copies have been emerging. Edited by Princetane

The rest of 1935 included the 6d, 1/- and Half crown.   The Halfcrown is Fine to gFine, Shilling is cleaned aFine and 6d is VG. 6d numbers were high, but the other saw issue numbers in the 600ks - average but well below the bumper number of coins issued in 1933/34. The Halfcrown is about the best you can get under the Average Circulated - its definitely better than average - but well below the VF/EF coins I have been showing. You will notice the lips on the left mask have wear and the George V portrait has a full band but blurred jewel detail. About the 1935 3d - The other coins were issued as proofs in 364 sets and they originally had only 5 coins - the Waitangi Crown to the 6d, a 3d was not planned for 1935 as 12 million had been issued already, well ahead of needs. The 1935 3d was a business strike and £500 worth was ordered from London in February 1936 and delivered 1 month later. Originally they just wanted 364 for the sets, but London demanded a minimum order and the 364 proofs were added on top. In late March 1936 - 40364 1935 dated 3d coins arrived in New Zealand, 364 were added to the proof sets and the rest circulated. The sets were held back until this time and in mid 1936 they were finally released in 2 grades, a Plush red box and a cardboard box, 6 coins - 3d to waitangi Crown, all are incredibly rare. A 1935 3d retails at $200 in VG condition, $1000 in gVF and about $3000 in UNC. That is enough history for today     |

1935 also saw the Silver Jubilee Crown in the UK   It featured a design of St George and the Dragon designed by Percy Metcalfe and had a very Art Deco feel to it, with 714,700 coins issued with 2,500 Proofs it was a very high number of crowns in the 1927/36 period (I really hope someone has one - as they are beautiful coins) The design with George high above the dragon led to the moniker - Rocking Horse crown!  The coin had on the edge "Decus et tutamen, Anno Regni XXV" - An ornament and a safeguard, 25th year of reignThe design divided people as some in the 1930s thought Art Deco art had no place on an Imperial coin celebrating an auspicious anniversary, which bought some cheer to the Depression. My opinion is I love it - a very innovative and beautiful design. My coin is EF/aEF but quite hazy. Update 7 hours later - Just realised it has King George V as St. George - very clever given he was 70 by this stage! And known for saying "Bugger Bognor" when asked if he wanted to go to Bognor Regis to soothe his arthritis. Edited by Princetane

1935 - Silver Jubilee of King George V. British coins, other than the crown, retained the same designs used since 1927. For banknote collectors, an extremely common and distinctive series of bills was issued for the very first time - Monopoly money! The popular board game first went on sale in 1935! Sixpence (retrieved from circulation circa 1970):  My Silver Jubilee crown has a bit of an edge knock, but was quite a good buy at £2.50 in the 1970s (before the big hike in silver prices in 1980):  |

You are so lucky to pull all these coins out of circulation years ago. The closest I got was finding a 1942 shilling in a pile of old 10 cent coins in 2006 before we switched to smaller coins. 5c, 10c, 20c all circulated with 6d, 1/- and 2/- before 2006.   A beautiful Palestine 50 mils coin of 1935. Despite the staining, its easily a EF piece. It's about the only date of 50 mils that does not cost an arm and a leg! |

One good turn deserves another   A cupronickel 10 mils coin of Palestine, this was larger in size than the 50 mils. I don't have an even larger 20 mils or the silver 100 mils, the largest coin (Florin sized). Corrected a mistake on Jubilee Crown, thought it was Eric Gill, but just old Percy Metcalfe again - who offered Art Decoey designs in contrast to imperial crowns and oaks of Kruger Grey. More 1935 Masterpieces tomorrow. |

1935 France 100 francs.  The single attempt with gold coins for the post-WWI Poincare franc, introduced 1928 together with a reestablishment of the gold standard. The Poincare franc was revalued to 1:5 of its pre-war value, thus this 100 francs coin is the same size as a pre-war 20 francs gold coin. More than 13 million of these coins were minted 1935-36 but never put into circulation. The falling value of the franc resulted in too large a discrepancy between nominal and melt value. |
