Today's coin is a brother/sister to the 10 Escudos posted 2 weeks ago. The big differences are related to the silver % (.68 to .835) and the obverse of the series includes the crest of Portugal. These are also rarer with mintages ranging from 186K to 3 million. While the 1954/55 series had higher mintages. This type was minted from 1932 to 1948. 1942 is the key with a mintage of 186K. Issuer: Portugal Period: Second Republic (1926-1974) Type: Standard circulation coin Years: 1932-1948 Value: 10 Escudos (10 PTE) Currency: Escudo (1911-2001) Composition: Silver (.835) Weight: 12.5 g Diameter: 30 mm Thickness:1.92 mm Shape: Round Orientation: Medal alignment Demonetized: Yes References: KM582 Mintage: 1,200,000

Today's coin is a Red Uncirculated 10 centavos from 1940. The interesting story about this coin features the model used to create Liberty. After the overthrow of the monarchy, Portugal wanted its coinage to feature Liberty like the coins of France. The mint (Casa Da Moeda) reached out to several artists to create sculptures to be used on the coins. One of the artist tasked was walking in Lisbon and saw a very pretty preteen/teen walking with her mother. He went over to them and asked the mother if he could sculpt her daughter. Being a cautious and smart mother when a random stranger appears and asks to sculpt your child she agreed but only on 2 conditions. 1) Her daughter couldn't be nude 2) The mother had to be there when he was sculpting her daughter. The artist agreed and sculpted her face wearing a type of tiara/crown. When the clay sculpture was presented the Casa Da Moeda liked the look of the model as she looked Portuguese but didn't like the crown/tiara as that made it look like royalty which Portugal just overthrew. Other artists modeled a liberty more like the ones in France but with crowns and Phrygian caps. The Casa De Moeda not liking the crowns and the non Portuguese looking liberties wanted a combination of both. Portugal at this time not being the most morale of countries (they had 9 presidents and 44 Prime Ministers in 16 years), asked the on staff sculptor to combine the Portuguese Girl with a Phrygian Cap resulting in the below coin. From what I gathered no one was actually paid to create the coin. The girls name also seems to have been lost to history. 1940 was the last year of issue for this series. 1930 is the key date. Issuer: Portugal Period: First Republic (1910-1926) Type: Standard circulation coin Years: 1924-1940 Value: 10 Centavos (0.10 PTE) Currency: Escudo (1911-2001) Composition: Bronze Weight: 4 g Diameter: 22 mm Thickness: 1.50 mm Shape: Round Orientation: Medal alignment Demonetized: Yes References: KM573 Mintage (1940): 3,384,000

Today's coin commemorates the 125th of the Bank of Portugal. The Banco de Portugal is the central bank of the Portuguese Republic. The bank was founded by royal charter in 1846, during the reign of Queen Maria II of Portugal, by a merger of the Banco de Lisboa (Bank of Lisbon), the first bank founded in Portugal, and the Companhia Confiança Nacional (National Insurance Company), making it one of the oldest banks in continuous operation in the world. It is a full member of the Eurosystem and the European System of Central Banks. The bank was designated by the Portuguese Crown as the emitter of legal tender, at the time the Portuguese real, which it continued producing until 1911. Following the Implementation of the Republic in 1910, the Banco de Portugal began to emit the Portuguese Escudo. In 1932, the bank established the Biblioteca do Banco de Portugal, one of the most significant private libraries in Portugal. During the Estado Novo, the bank pursued a vigorous policy of gold acquisition starting in 1957, which has contributed towards Portugal's present-day status of having the 14th largest gold reserve in the world. Issuer: Portugal Period: Second Republic (1926-1974) Type: Circulating commemorative coin Year: 1971 Value: 50 Escudos (50 PTE) Currency: Escudo (1911-2001) Composition: Silver (.650) Weight:18 g Diameter: 34 mm Shape: Round Orientation: Coin alignment Demonetized: Yes References: KM601 Mintage: 500,000

Thanks all (Triggersmob, Hokie and jBuck), I have 2 more coins which will complete the 20 Centavos type set, but I haven't had time to take pictures. I'll get to them probably next week. I have 3 more coins I really want, but 1 is pretty rare so it might have to wait, until I can find one certified. I would like to also pick up some of the early kingdom coins but again harder to find and costly. So after the next 2 it may be a while before I get back to these. I am planning on going to Portugal next year, so you never know what I might find. I'm really happy I did this series. And Steve (Triggersmob) your beautiful pictures inspired me to get several coins that I had originally no interest. So thank you
