The central figure on the coin's commemorative reverse is David Thompson, a major figure in exploring and mapping Canada's interior (Alberta, Manitoba, Saskatchewan), Thompson is connected to the United States via his surveying work concerning the US-Canada border, mapping the region of present-day North Dakota (later used by Lewis and Clark), his setting up of trading posts in the present-day states of Idaho and Montana and his exploration of the Columbia River, including traveling through the present-day states of Oregon and Washington. In the far background of the design is seen a Western Canada mountain range.(likely Canada's portion of the Rocky Mountains range).
