@ Hondo - What site to you use to translate the date from Arabic to Gregorian? I have one, but it is difficult to use and is only good for some of the Islamic dates. like this one but only seems to work for Nepalese numbers....
Well, the forum will not let me post up that URL to show you..
On the one above, I can back track the URL, but it gets sketchy and some of the other pages don't translate the date.

Sorry that I missed your question, Dearborn - I was very distracted tonight. Working with coins has forced me to learn how to read Arabic numerals, but I always confirm on Numista because different countries have different dating conventions.
Usually the Gregorian date is on the left and the Islamic date on the right. So on the Egyptian coin above, what looks like "197." is 1960.

If there's only an Islamic date, there may also be a regnal year somewhere. That's where Numista comes in again. I marked up this Ottoman Empire 1 Kurus 1846 as an example. Just remember that the Islamic year does not start on Jan. 1 so there's not a direct correlation of dates.

Edited to correct spelling of regnal.

Yep, I do the same - but sometimes finding the date is difficult

That is something I didn't realize - thanks.

This is where I get into trouble dating these coins.

Thanks for that chart of numbers - very handy (I have something similar)
My main problem is that as far as I can tell there are at least 4 different Arabic - Islamic ways to display the numbers, and knowing which one is a pain in the ...

Thanks for your time in explaining some of this. I have muddled through with great difficulty and need to find better 'QUICKER' way to date them.. [O]]

You're welcome, Dearborn. It's often challenging to date Islamic coins, especially older ones. And circulated ones are sometimes impossible - sometimes you can't tell if it's a 2 or a 3. I have quite a few with a ? after the date on the 2X2.
