I find it interesting that the first three series of U.S. nickels had a fairly significant design change in the first year or two of the series. The Shield nickels had the rays removed from the reverse in the second year of issue, the word "cents" was added to the reverse of the Liberty nickel in its first year, and the denomination was recessed in the first year of the Buffalo nickel.

Here are two trios of type nickels, one for each of the two major designs.

Type 1:
