Quote: Checking IDs is like posting a warning sign. It will not stop a pro, but it deters idiot people from doing idiot things. Exactly.

Quote: but if they want an e-mail addy from me, I have a 'junk' address I give out, one that I have access to for replies if needed. This way any and all junk mail that can result from them 'selling' my info goes there and not to my main address. I do this, and also give a fake phone number. It's easier to block emails than phone calls, especially when they get sold to marketers with random caller ID numbers.

That's why I only answer numbers I know - anybody else will leave a message if it's important. Eventually Tele-marketers will delete your number from their loop after getting no answer.

Quote: What exactly is the big fuss about? You never did mention why you are so against the practice of showing ID's What "big fuss?" Just wondering who here has been to ANA or FUN and what their experience is, don't want to waste my time traveling to a show if I'm not going in for any reason. Thats not a big fuss is it?

These shows fill a large convention show with several hundred if not 1k+ dealers. It's a blast! Some of absolutely everything to see from entry level discount bins to true rarities you might never get the chance to see again.
I personally have no issue showing my ID, which is for security because there might be a few hundred million $ worth of inventory in there. The entertainment is worth it.

Quote: What "big fuss?" Ah let's see: Quote: Can you enter without ID or is it 100% req'd? I don't mind paying admission, even wear the little bracelets they give me. But ID to enter? Quote: I don't care why the promoters want my info, they're not getting it.
Quote: They can call it "security", I call it "data mining", Quote: Are they going to demand my ID / photo just to enter? If so, I just won't go

Being mindful about sharing your own personal data is by no means unnecessary (I'm glad I live where GDPR applies). I guess it all boils down as to how paranoid someone is. If everyone were to behave ethically there'd be no problem with any of it. However, if any party involved is not, then it opens up all sorts of scenarios so being mindful it's reasonable.
For me it's situational. I'd have no problem showing my ID to the police or if they had a proper-looking security setup at major events like the one you are talking about. But if some rando in a t-shirt at a local show were to start asking or writing down my info.. or taking pics.. nah!

@Marve65 - Your definition of "big fuss" is unnecessarily broad, and your evidence thereof is lacking. Furthermore, why challenge the motivation of my post? I asked a specific question about ANA and FUN. Still hoping to hear from those who have attended.

jeffbuckes, I have been to ANA and FUN. Be prepared to show your ID. You can always reach out to the organizers beforehand to see if they make exceptions. I would not expect you to be spammed with emails/calls, but if concerned, provide different info or leave blank. I've never been contacted by FUN. I was already being spammed by the ANA since I'm a member.

Give as much or as little information as you find comfortable. If it bothers you, do not go. There are other shows, other venues.

@Cdncoins -
Thank you for the info, glad to hear from someone who has been to both shows!
@jbuck -
You're exactly right! Now I know these two shows aren't for me, very glad I asked before I traveled 1000 miles to get there.
Thanks to all for commenting in this thread. Got sidetracked for awhile but worked out in the end.

Checking ID's will become an issue if it is recorded. That would put you at risk later if that info was to go into the wrong hands.

Our hobby comes with risks and it's our job to protect ourselves. No names, no addresses, no lists. My personal security outweighs the needs of anyone and everyone else. Not to mention the potential for gov't intrusion if / when one day the gov't says we're not allowed to own gold or silver! Happened here in the US not so long ago, happened in many other countries too.
