What made me suspicious was the diameter and weight.

36 mm and 26 g would be good a large silver coin

Well made medals should be thicker than coins. And gold is twice as dense. That size and weight make sense of a silver gilded medal. Not for a solid gold one unless it is very thin. Unusually thin for a medal.
