Yes, that's disappointing. Sorry you got burned somewhat. I've never been a proponent of
TPG for many years now. Frankly I think its a waste of $. However, collectors are terrified of purchasing a counterfeit coin so I suppose they prefer
TPG for that reason. This is why I've been working on Die Studies, especially for the Victorian era. It provides collectors references whereby they can be rest assured that if their unslabbed coin is in the study its genuine, negating the need for authentication aspect of
TPG. Die studies also can identify strike issues for certain die pairs so that a coin that may be deemed VF at first glance may actually be an AU because the strike was so poor. Most people with reasonably acute observation skills should be able to grade their coin within half a grade of reality with a bit of practice and the right references. Obviously
TPG won't like what I have to say here, but it is nevertheless the truth.
