My guess is the toning was caused by the coin being wrapped in tissue paper or the like and stored in a high humidity environment Report this Post to the Staff

spru Bedrock of the Community United States 12477 Posts	Posted 04/06/2017 11:08 pm I just discovered this after an acetone bath (the coin, not me). I used an acetone soaked q-tip to manually remove any remaining film and, I swear, it toned right before my eyes! It wasn't noticeably gunked up and the q-tip showed nothing (it usually turns green or black).
