My collection of currency from Portugal is getting harder and harder to complete. Of the notes outstanding only 4 to 5 are readily available and if I want them in high grade I need to be willing pay. And while I actively search for missing notes but can't find them in the US. I do have a dealer in Portugal that when he is able to get a note in the grade I want he will send it to me. But since they take anywhere from 10 days to 3 weeks, I am always worried when I buy from Portugal as it just gets stuck in the US mail and I have no way to track it once it leaves Portugal. About a month ago, my dealer reached out to me with the below note. Based on condition and price I couldn't say no. This note is Pick 162 with the signature of Manuel António do Casal-Ribeiro de Carvalho. The note features D. Francisco de Almeida, who was a Portuguese nobleman, soldier and explorer. He distinguished himself as a counsellor to King John II of Portugal and later in the wars against the Moors and in the conquest of Granada in 1492. In 1505 he was appointed as the first governor and viceroy of the Portuguese State of India. Almeida is credited with establishing Portuguese hegemony in the Indian Ocean with his victory at the naval Battle of Diu in 1509. Before Almeida returned to Portugal he lost his life in a conflict with indigenous people at the Cape of Good Hope in 1510.

Quote: Outstanding! Thanks @jbuck! Quote: Very nice acquisitions, walk2dwater! -well, they're like penny-stock & sometimes I question why I buy em but I did (& at least they're UNC in case anyone wants an extra one) Here's a couple more "el-cheapos" P-66 from Lebanon (which is actually kind of pretty) before its economy tanked: And a 5 Bolivares (P-73) from Venezuela before it sunk into hyperinflationville. All the dealer stock came with this P-73 500 Marks from 1922 Germany. Another easy note but this one a gem:
