My new baby...bought this from an Ikegroup member...he found 3 Nightcrawlers right soon after news broke, and, this was his last slabbed coin...will go to PCGS for conservation, reholder, and, pray for a bump up in grade to PF68. Official count of known nightcrawlers is about 20...unofficially, some think there are more in hand being kept low under the radar, until decision made by Cherrypickers-TPG's what to call it, if to be included in Complete Variety Registry Sets...time will tell.

Let me rephrase something...the Nightcrawler as I understand it, would be classified as an ERROR(hubbed through "loose" debris", rarer than "struck thru", as the damage was on working dies...unless it is proved to be an "intentional" mistake...someone at the mint tinkering around, this will never be called a true Variety, and, inclusion in a Variety set probably unlikely...they never did "prove" anything about the Wisconsin "Extra Leaf" 25c,(error, or, speculation was a purposeful addition by mint worker, yet, TPG's call this a Variety as High Extra Leaf--Low Extra Leaf"...may be apples and oranges, but, does leave open a big door for how the Nightcrawler will go down in history, and, be classified.

Yeah, the night crawler is neat in that it is sort of a "repeated" error. I also doubt that it will ever be called a true variety, but who knows what the future will hold for this. With that said, though, I STILL want one. If anything, this coin will probably become legend in the Ike dollar series.

Quote: Although not an actual Eisenhower dollar, I picked this up in Nashville as a new little project. I think its kind of neat because it only has slots for up to 1976. Like. Quote: Bought this cool 1971-D "TIGER CLAW" PCGS MS64, with DIVA Card... Very nice! Quote: Let me rephrase something...the Nightcrawler as I understand it, would be classified as an ERROR(hubbed through "loose" debris", rarer than "struck thru", I disagree. It is a die variety, since every coin struck with that die will have the same image. It is not a die error because the difference occured during hubbing, not during die use. https://goccf.com/t/83936&whichpage=2#687455I could be wrong, so discussion is welcome.

I picked up 95 Ikes from a tellers tray while dumping on the way home from work. She had 35 gold dollars and 5 Ikes in her tray so I said I'll take all of your dollar coins. So she proceeds to go to 3 different stations and pulls out 95 Ikes and 68 small dollars.

What a thread! I'm only a couple of dozen pages into it but had to take a break so my head could stop spinning!
It's also raising a lot of questions for me but I'll go through the whole thread and see if any of them are answered......
WOW.....
