@bakeshady I can't answer your questions, but I must say that you need to get that into a new 2x2 holder and dispense of those rusty staples.  @derekbob24 That looks like what's called a bag mark. If so, that's probably the worst I have ever seen. It looks like the reeded edge of another dollar struck your coin with a lot of force. Are you absolutely sure it came from the Mint like that? I am 1000% sure it came from the mint like this. It came from an uncirculated set. 10 years ago I took it out of the cellophane,I still donr know what I was thinking. There is no way that this is a bag mark, two coins striking each other can't leave a dent like this.

I agree with spruett001 that it's the reeded edge of another Ike, but it appears way too clean and deep to be a bag mark, IMO. I just can't imagine what force produced a collision of this magnitude, but I think it's impossible that it happened in a bag. It's enigmatic, to be sure. A few years ago I also cut open a mint error from a 1977 mint set. It's a struck-thru grease error. I too wish I had kept it sealed, but I didn't know any better at the time. I recognized that something was not right with it, but I didn't understand what it was. derekbob24 - seems like maybe it's "struck through reeding". https://www.coinworld.com/news/us-c...ter.all.html I never heard of that before but searching strike-through errors landed on a similar image. Otherwise at first I thought it was struck through a screw or bolt, something threaded. Probably worth full images in the error section? Pretty cool! If I have time, I'll post a picture but went to PNC bank today to dump some dimes and saw 4 Ikes in the tellers coin tray so I bought them!

I just want to post this to tease jBuck. I actually was supposed to send these to PCGS but forgot to get him. So just my 1973 went off to PCGS along with many Golden toned Bison's.   |

I just completed my 4th Eisenhower dollar Dansco album: The last two holes I filled were the 1972-S silver business strike and the 1976-S silver proof.   Then, I picked up this 72-D from JT Stanton. The surfaces looked..... different, with very clean, satiny fields. It has a semi proof planchet look to it. It is the cleanest 72-D in my collection for sure.    Edited by Darth Morgan
