Thanks ... this site helps a lot!

For some reason I had to go to the main page and type in the rest of the URL manually before I could get it to open. I think they have some problems with SSL encryption configuration: their main page seems to use https, but some of the subpages do not.

I have examined several hi-res pictures on the Heritage site, but having difficulty pinning down the specific elements to look for in distinguishing the D/D from the regular strike.

Is there anything except for the mintmark (die clashes, die cracks, etc.) which might help? That "D" is so darn small!

This 1886-P has doubling on the date: The "1" is similar to VAM-4, but the entire date is doubled similar to VAM-12. However, there is a reverse die clash like VAM-1C, except that I could find only one clash.

Thanks for looking!

The latest development could also have a chilling effect on U.S. buyers at foreign auction venues:

Just saw this over on the sixbid.com website:

This was written from a European perspective. Raises almost as many questions as it clears up, though.

Thanks to everyone for their replies!

The difference in price between MS66 and MS66+ doesn't seem to justify the submission price, so I think it will just stay like it is.

Having it in the old green rattler holder is enough of a plus, I think.

I have this Buffalo nickel (1937, in an old PCGS green rattler holder graded MS66):

It is said that often, coins graded in these slabs would grade one point higher if removed and put in a more current PCGS holder. Considering today's PCGS pricing:

I am tempted! But I don't think it would grade any higher than MS66.

And if it graded MS68, PCGS is going to charge me a percentage of the estimated value... Besides, I would need to find a buyer willing to pay the PCGS price...

Of course, it is also possible that it would get downgraded.

I think I'll leave it alone. What do you think?

@BStrauss3: Thanks for the info!

Does anyone know about FedEx / DHL / etc.? A lot of auction houses are shipping coins that way nowadays.

This is pretty much what I mean, although it is more about fine art than about coins:

https://www.artnews.com/art-news/ne...-1234737714/

But I'm pretty sure that coin auctions will be treated much the same as art auctions.

Will U.S. buyers in overseas auctions now have to pay an additional toll on their coins when importing them into the USA?

What about European residents bidding in U.S. auctions?

Any thoughts?

Thanks! It looks like you are probably right, judging from the images I could find of this variety on the PCGS website.

I took some pictures which captured some of the edge. Also, I am posting two details of the reverse -- not sure what other diagnostics this has.

In case anyone is wondering how the edge was captured, I just put the coin in a silver soup ladel which reflects the edge rather nicely. Unfortunately, the coin is rather thin, so it didn't come out as well as my Russian ruble coins, for example.

There is reeding between the words on the edge, in case it matters. I suppose these were struck in a collar with the edge lettering in the collar, AKA "milled" coins? As opposed to doing the edging in a separate process, such as using a Castaing machine?

@MisterT: Having just taken a good look at your avatar -- I just posted a new thread about a 50 cent 1833 capped bust which, if you have time, I'd like to know what you think about it!

Thinking that it could be Overton 113, but not ruling out 111 yet (or whatever else it might actually be):

Tomorrow I will post more pictures including the lettered edge.

I bought this coin in 2012, put it in a 2x2 holder, and never realized that it had lettering on the edge until today!

Thanks for looking!

Got out my trusty Nikon D60 with macro lens, took more pictures, and -- there it is, die crack and ghost of the "1" right at the left of the "2":

@mrwhatisit: Now you have to reveal to us HOW you were able to spot this from my very inadequate (IMHO) pictures in my first post! At 73, my eyesight isn't what it used to be (and these trimes are SO small...)

Thanks again very much to everyone!

In the meantime, I cropped out the detail around the date from one of the coins on the PCGS site -- hope I won't get in trouble for doing this. After all, this is for a scholarly endeavor which implies fair use of copyrighted material:

Here, the die crack from the rim through the "1" to the star is prominent, but often it is not visible on other coins.

Are there any additional diagnostics?

@mrwhatisit -- Thak you! Wow, I had no idea!

I'm going to get out my better camera and see if I can get good close-ups of this. I looked at the PCGS site for 1862/1 images, but their detail close-up wouldn't load for some reason.

Is there another online reference which I could consult? I only have two or three trimes and never bought a special book about them.

I do have the Walter Breen reference, and he has a close-up of the date. It looks like there is also doubling inside the "8" which I can see in my first pictures. However, I cannot make out the shadow of the "1" to the left of the "2" without better magnification.

Looking again at some PCGS images of coins classified as regular 1862 strikes, it looks like some of these might also actually be unrecognized overdates. That makes me feel a little better about not having noticed it.

This is so cool -- for me, anyway!

I have this 1862 silver trime:

Notice the neat die clash on the reverse between the "i"s of "III".

Now, when I browse the PCGS site, I found this one:
https://www.pcgs.com/coinfacts/coin.../images/3678

Here's a direct link to the hi-res images:
https://d1htnxwo4o0jhw.cloudfront.n...60882555.jpg

Looks like my 1862 trime was struck suing the same reverse die as the 1860 coin! However, it looks like the clash is somehow rotated 180 degrees?

[EDIT: Scrolling down the PCGS images list, it looks like there are actually several with the same die clash, some oriented the same as mine, others 180 deg. rotated. ]
